HAUDENSCHILD HUSTLES TO OHIO SPRINT CAR SERIES WIN AT NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY
Orrville, Ohio
Saturday, July 2, 2016
By Mike Swanger
Making their first visit ever to NAPA Wayne County Speedway on McDonalds night, the Ohio Sprint Car Series 25 lap feature was claimed by Wooster’s Jac Haudenschild as the Sprint Car Hall of Fame driver would slice and dice his way through the field from his 7th starting position and take the lead for good on lap 14 and pull away for the win, his second of the year at Orrville’s Historic track. Ryan Broughton would grab the lead from the pole position to set the early pace as fellow front row starter Jason Dolick would follow with Nick Patterson, Dean Jacobs and Haudenschild in tow after five laps. Driving the Miller owned #6, Haudenschild would leap frog over Patterson and Jacobs on the next circuit and two laps later took second from Dolick and set sail for Broughton, who had built up a sizable lead. The ‘Wild Child’ used his experience of the racing surface and caught up to Broughton and raced by on lap 14. The field would be bunched together after a lap 21 caution for Dolick and Ryan Myers and as the green flag returned, Broughton would bounce off the turn two guardrail and Jacobs and OSCS points leader Cole Duncan slipped past to trail Haudenschild at the finish line with Nick Patterson taking fifth. Broughton, Dolick and Patterson posted the heat wins.
Dave Hornikel would lead the way for the opening 6 laps of the Harriger Towing Super Late Model feature but he had no breathing room as Ryan Markham, Doug Drown and Tyler Carpenter was on his bumper. Drown grabbed second from Markham on lap two and kept the pressure on Hornikel and when he bobbled in turn two, Drown and his Hall’s Auto Sales, Wooster Glass and Kar Connection #240 roared by and never looked back as the Wooster driver collected his second win of the season. Markham would take second from Hornikel on lap 11 with Carpenter moving to third with ten to go. Rick Bond would take fourth from Hornikel with four to go to claim fourth. Heat winners were Drown and Hornikel. JR Gentry barrel rolled twice in the first heat to stop the action, as he walked away with no injuries.
Canton’s Paul Holmes went flag to flag for his second win in the Action Auto Body Super Stock main aboard the #68. Bob Daugherty took second from Nick Smith on lap four and pulled alongside Holmes on lap seven but got loose in turn four and that allowed points leader Tyler Thompson to take second. Thompson would stay glued to Holmes’ rear bumper but could never get around the winner. Daugherty would finish third followed by Smith and Gary Hensel Jr. Daugherty, Holmes and Brandon Gardner captured the heat wins as Paul Kern scored the last chance victory.
Matt Aber would out race Justin Chance into turn one of the Kar Connection Rush Late Model feature and lead the way for the first 7 laps when the caution flag flew. On the double file restart, Aber took the outside position with Ashland’s Ryan Markham, who had taken second from Chance on lap 4, on the inside. Markham would use the low groove to take the lead. Charlie Duncan moved into second on lap 12, just before the red flag came out for Chuck Kimble, who was upside down in turn three as he would walk away okay. On this restart, Markham used the inside lane and kept Duncan at bay to park the Harriger Towing, H & T Demolition and Accu Shocks #5m in victory lane for the second time this year and expand his points lead. Dave Airgood won the heat.
The front row of the WQKT Mini Stock feature had  Stephen Crowe and Wes Staley there and Crowe would lead the way for the opening three laps when Staley took over for the next four circuits as Millersburg’s Dale Beckett and Chris Priebe right behind the whole time. Beckett and his Kaufman Country Market and M & S Concrete #4 would take the point on lap eight. Mitch Reichard found a groove he liked and moved past Priebe with three to go. As Beckett came out of turn four for the checkered flag, his car spit and sputtered and as he crossed the finish line, went up in smoke but beat Reichard by a quarter of a car length for his second win of the season. Priebe was third as Moose Workman and Crowe filled out the top five. Beckett, Dustin Ragan and Doug Hensel paced the heat races.
First heat winner Daryl Conkle and Brandon Gardner led laps in the Flat Track Cart feature but it was second heat winner Chuck Conway leading the last eight laps for the win. Conkle would finish second with Coty Conway, Gardner and Chase Camillo filling out the top five.
All drivers were once again pursuing Contingency Connection Racer Rewards that are worth over $100,000 for the season at NAPA Wayne County Speedway.
The Harriger Towing Super Late Models take center stage next Saturday with round two of the Attica Raceway Park/ NAPA Wayne County Speedway Super Late Model Challenge. The Fisher Performance Sprints, Action Auto Body Super Stocks, Kar Connection Rush Late Models, WQKT Mini Stocks and the Flat Track Carts all will be in action also.

RICO ABREU WINS WCS SPEEDWEEK

RICO ABREU DOMINATES NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY OHIO SPRINT SPEEDWEEK SHOW; THOMPSON HANGS ON TO 4th SUPER STOCK WIN
Orrville, Ohio
Monday, June 20, 2016
By Tyler Altmeyer & Mike Swanger
After missing the main event on Sunday at Millstream Speedway, St Helena, California’s Rico Abreu made an impressive rebound and nearly swept round four of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket at Orrville’s NAPA Wayne County Speedway to win the Duffy Smith Memorial on Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic night. Abreu earned victories during his respective heat race and dash after being the 7th fastest qualifier, all before leading all 30 circuits of the feature program. The $5,000 Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket victory was the 4th Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions win of his career, going back to back at NAPA Wayne County Speedway in 2016.
“I just love being a part of this team. It’s all about preparation and these guys certainly make that happen,” explained Rico Abreu. “I love to watch my guys work. Even after a tough night like last night, they stayed focused and knew what they had to do to turn things around. Really glad to be up here again. Wayne County Speedway rreminds me so much of racing back home.”
Rico Abreu took command of the feature field immediately after the initial green flag, winning the drag race into turns one and two with Andrew Palker and Jac Haudenschild in tow. the 30 lap main event was halted five times, two of which for red flag conditions during the first five circuits. Despite the frequent cautions, and a needed fuel stop on lap 22, Abreu kept the pace on the point, never feeling pressure from those racing behind him. Kyle Larson, who started third on the feature grid, maintained a top five running position the entire distance, eventually finishing second at the checkers. Fast qualifier Sheldon Haudenschild finished third followed by fifth row starter Danny Holtgraver and California native Carson Macedo.
“I’m just so comfortable here, “ said Rico Abreu. “ The turns were completely different here tonight. It really reminds me of Tulare back home in California. My style fits this place. I’m just really happy for my team. I think we are all excited to get back to this place.”
In the companion Action Auto Body Super Stock main, Streetsboro’s Tyler Thompson held off Bob Daugherty to post his 4th win of the season and pocket the $1,000 winners share of the 25 lap feature. Driving the Nella Enterprises, R-T Fence Company and Action Auto Body #T2, held off an early challenge from fellow front row starter Gary Hensel Jr. as 15th and 16th starting Daugherty and Paul Holmes picked their way up through the field as Daugherty would take second on lap 11 with Holmes taking third from Hensel Jr. a lap later. Thompson would slide up the track on lap 13 that opened the door for Daugherty to take the point on lap 14 but the second generation driver came back to reclaim the lead on the next circuit. Daugherty would keep the pressure on as Holmes was right behind the leaders. With the checkered flag waited, Thompson and Daugherty were side by side coming out of turn four and Thompson would edge out Daugherty at the line for the narrow win. Tyler Nicely finished fourth behind Holmes as Chase Alexander recovered from an early caution to take fifth. Alexander, Tim Coen and Brandon Craver led the way in the heat races as Holmes topped the last chance race.
Thanks to Jerry McClure racing and all the fans for raising over $1,800 for Brad Haudenschild as he continues to recover from his illness
The next racing action at NAPA WCS will be Saturday, July 2 with the Ohio Sprint Car Series rolling in for a $2,500 to win feature along with the Harriger Towing Super Late Models, Kar Connection Rush Late Models, Action Auto Body Super Stocks and the WQKT Mini Stocks.

MUMAW, DROWN, HOLMES, MARKHAM & B. HENSEL CLAIM NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY MID-SEASON CHECKERS

Orrville, Ohio
Saturday, June 11, 2016
By Mike Swanger
It was Mid-Season championship time at NAPA Wayne County Speedway Saturday night presented by Ray’s Garage and Summit Racing that had double points attached. Jack Sodeman Jr. and Jason Dolick would bring the Fisher Performance Sprint feature to the green with Sodeman Jr. setting the first lap pace but Wooster’s Danny Mumaw would power past on the next lap and lead the rest of the way for his first NAPA WCS win of the season. Driving the Hitchcock Excavating, After Hours BBQ, and Mumaw Tree & Stump Removal #16 only challenge for the lead would come on the last lap restart following a red flag for Trevor Baker, who flipped going into turn three as the white flag was waving. Baker was ok. Sodeman Jr. who was in a early race battle for second with Dan Shetler, who dropped out with mechanical issues on lap 10,had one more chance at Mumaw, the winner at Lernerville the night before, but Mumaw sped away on the restart. Tenth starting Nick Patterson worked his way up through the field as he and Mitch Harble ran a tight race for third for the last half of the feature with Patterson nipping Harble at the line for third. Shawn Hubler filled out the top five. Harble, driving the Prosser-owned #19, Sodeman Jr. and Mumaw topped the heats.
The front row of JR Gentry and Doug Drown of Wooster would go back and forth on the opening lap of the Harriger Towing Super Late Model feature with Drown securing the point at the completion of the first lap and would never look back piloting the Hall’s Auto Sales, Wooster Glass and the Kar Connection #240 to claim his first win of the season at NAPA WCS. Second row starters Brad Malcuit and Rick Bond warred for the first five laps of the feature with Bond taking third for good on lap six and would chase down Gentry for third. Bond was in the process of taking second place from Gentry at the halfway mark but a the caution waved before he could complete the pass and kept Gentry in second. With the green flag waving again, Drown would pull away with Gentry holding second as Bond could not make another run on Gentry. Malcuit would hold on to fourth as 8th starting Larry Bellman rounded out the top five.Heat winners were Drown and Malcuit.
Tyler Nicely would use his outside front row starting position to lead the opening 6 laps of the Action Auto Body Super Stock main with Gary Hensel Jr. following from his outside second row starting spot and Hensel Jr. would slip past Nicely on lap seven for the lead but it was Canton’s Paul Holmes coming from his sixth place start to grab the top spot away from Hensel Jr with five to go and then take the #68 into victory circle for his first checker flag of the year. Hensel Jr. would hold on to second as Tyler Nicely held off his dad, Jim, for third with Tyler Thompson grabbing fifth. Chase Alexander, Jim Nicely and Hensel Jr. posted the heat wins.
Matt Aber leaped into the lead from his third starting position on the opening lap with Alan Dellinger challenging but Ashland’s Ryan Markham would take second from Dellinger on lap three and then power past Aber two laps later and then drive away from the field for his first Kar Connection Rush Late Model win of the season. Driving the H & T Demolition, Harriger Towing and Innovative Graphics #5m, Markham, the heat winner, would become the 4th different winner in the class so far this year. Dellinger held off 10th starting Justin Chance for second as Aber took home fourth as Charlie Duncan scored a fifth place finish.
Along with being Mid-Season Championship, the WQKT Mini Stocks were also competing for their second ‘Summer Series’ race sponsored by JoyRide Transportation with $300 going to the winner. Doug and Brad Hensel, the two heat winners, would start on the front row with Brad leading the way at the drop of the green flag and set the pace for the 15 lap, caution free main event and park his Smithville based, M & S Concrete, DJ Directional Services and JoyRide Transportation #28 in victory lane for the second time this year. Doug Hensel stayed in second all race long as Wes Staley claimed third. Michael Workman worked his way from starting ninth to finish fourth with Chris Priebe taking fifth.
Jamie Johnson would go flag to flag to win the Flat Track feature as Ron Jeffers, Cory Camillo, Brandon Gardner and Chuck Conway followed. Mike Winters and Johnson bested the heat races.
Contingency Connection Racers Awards totaling over $100,000 over the season were once again up for grabs for the NAPA Wayne County Speedway drivers.
The next racing action at NAPA WCS will be Monday, June 20th for Tony Stewart’s Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speed week show for the Duffy Smith Memorial race paying $5,000 to win. Nascar drivers Kasey Kahne and Rico Abreu, who won the ASCoC race on May 28th will be racing against Dale Blaney, Sheldon and Jac Haudenschild and all of the ASCoC regulars. Rico Abreu Wins WCS

RICO ABREU SCORES NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY ALL STAR WIN IN 1st EVER VISIT; MIKE PEGHER JR. TOPS SWEENEY RUSH LATE MODELS; THOMPSON 3 FOR 3

Orrville, Ohio

Saturday, May 28,2016

By Tyler Altmeyer & Mike Swanger

For the first time in his career, Rico Abreu entered action at NAPA Wayne County Speedway on White Ford night, joining the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions for the second leg of their Memorial Day weekend swing through northern Ohio. The St. Helena CA. driver made his trip to Orrville, Ohio, worthwhile, scoring $5,000 and a third career Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions victory in front of a big crowd. The “Low Rider” Dale Blaney crossed under the checkers second followed by Andrew Palker for his second top five finish of the season. “ Just happy to be up here in front of this great crowd,” said Rico Abreu in victory lane. “ I just want to thank everyone for coming out tonight. A big thanks to Tony Stewart for allowing all of this to happen. We have a busy weekend and week still ahead of us. This is a great start and we’ll try to keep this going.”

Abreu, who was fast qualifier, started second on the main grid, made his first bid for the top spot just before the halfway point of the 30 lap feature, eventually worked around pole sitter and leader Andrew Palker in traffic on lap 14. Sheldon Haudenschild and Dale Blaney also worked around Palker, creating a three car battle for the lead. By lap 20, traffic started to intensify, allowing Sheldon Haudenschild to apply heavy pressure on Abreu. Using the top line of the speedway, Haudenschild worked around Abreu on lap 25, setting a new pace at the front of the field. Fortunately for Abreu, Haudenschild’s wicked pace around NAPA Wayne County’s rim would only last until lap 28, when the Wooster native made contact with a lapped car, bringing out the main event’s first and only red flag. Haudenschild would get upside down, but walked away unharmed but would not return. Rico Abreu inherited the point position and led the final three circuits to clinch his first ever Arctic Cat All Star of Champions victory at NAPA Wayne County Speedway. Dale Blaney finished second after starting third followed by former two time NAPA Wayne County Speedway track champion Andrew Palker. Cole Duncan and Jac Haudenschild rounded out the top five. The “Wild Child” started 19th after winning the ’B’ Main on the last lap climbed 14 positions to secure his top five finish as well as the MSD Hard Charger Award.

“Some one told me at the beginning of the night that Sheldon was going to be the guy to beat in traffic here,” explained Abreu. “He definitely proved that. I was going to race on all parts of the track, just trying to find where I was comfortable. The second I knew I let the top open, Sheldon would be right there. I think things would have got really interesting those last three laps if Sheldon wouldn’t have got crashed. Hats off to him and his guys. They’ve been fast all year”.

In a thirty lap feature, Wexford Pa.’s Mike Pegher Jr. held off race long challenges from different drivers to pocket the $2,000 to win Sweeney Rush Late Model feature. Pegher Jr. would lead the opening lap from the pole but Dave Lyon would take the point for the next three laps before Pegher Jr., driving the Royal Flush/Royal Purple, Jack’s Recycling and Melvins Transnission #RJ1, reclaimed the lead. John Waters would move into the runner up position at that time also and those three were nip and tuck until the halfway mark when Waters and Lyon both got out of shape and allowed Ryan Markham to slip past into second. Markham, a five time track champion of NAPA WCS, would go door handle to door handle for the next three laps with Pegher Jr.. Waters would take back second place on lap 18. From then on, it was a four car battle between Pegher Jr., Lyons, Markham and Waters as they would never be more than two car lengths apart as they would finish in that order. Bruce Hordusky Jr. would be awarded fifth after Matt Aber was DQ’ed for being light at the scales after the race. Pegher Jr and Lyon won the heat races

Driving the Action Auto Body, Nella Enterprises and Ofex of Ohio #T2, Streetsboro’s Tyler Thompson led all the way for his third win of the season in the caution filled Action Auto Body Super Stock feature. With several cautions in the opening six laps keeping the field bunched together. The next eight laps would go yellow flag free and that would allow Thompson to pull away from Paul Holmes and Gary Hensel Jr. Those two drivers would have a spirited battle for second and when the caution flew just as the white flag waved, that would give them one more shot at Thompson.

As the final lap ran, Thompson kept Holmes and Hensel Jr. at bay to win his third feature of the season. Don Baney would finish fourth as Jordan James gathered fifth from his 20th starting spot. Holmes, Brandon Gardner and Hensel Jr. bested the heat races.

Drivers were also competing for more than $100,000 of yearly awards from the Contingency Connections Racer Rewards program.

Next Saturday, June 4th, it will be a regular show with the OVSCA joining the Fisher Performance Sprints with the Harriger Towing Super Late Models, Kar Connection Rush Late Models, Action Auto Body Super Stocks and the WQKT Mini Stocks back in action. It will be School Spirit night with the School with the most spirit getting $200 for it’s athletic program. It will also be $1 dog night.
