During the World of Outlaw Craftsman Late Model Series event at NAPA Wayne County Speedway, on White’s Ford night, a fan in attendance decided to support the Series further than the purchase of his ticket. Joe Seins, from JD Empire Trucking, posted an extra $2,500 towards the to-win amount of an already $10,000 prize. Series powerhouse, Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Illinois, was the winner of the evening as he found his way to Victory Lane for the 1st time since the beginning of the month. “We’ve had a good car every time we hit the track, we’ve just haven’t had things go our way and that’s why it’s called racing and not winning” said Sheppard. We couldn’t do this without all of our help and all of our sponsors”. Sheppard started sixth in the 50 lap feature and found his way past five cars to claim the lead on lap 21, further proving that no matter what number the Rocket 1 driver pulls in the redraw, he can still find his way to the front.
Yet the most impressive hard charger of the evening was Devin Moran, who started 19th in the feature and found his way to Sheppard’s bumper by lap 34. With several cautions throughout the race, Moran was hoping to pass the #1 during the restarts but Sheppard was able to significantly pull away from the field every time.
“Just to start back that far and be able to come up to second just shows how good the race track was to race on,” said Moran. ” I really thought we had a shot to win this thing once we got to second but Brandon and them guys were really good and I used up my tires a little to much. Starting 19th and running second, it was a good night. I can’t complain.”
Moran and his crew worked diligently throughout the day in order to land on the podium for the second night in a row. Unlike the previous night at Atomic Speedway, the stars did not align quite as nice for Moran as he had some mechanical issues during his heat race which would place him 8th in the Last Chance Showdown. Between the heat and the Showdown, the Tye Twarog/DMR team was able to dial in the Rocket XR1 #9 as Moran went on to pass seven cars to win the Showdown.
Shane Clanton also had his hands full getting ready for the feature after he lost the right side and nose of his car during the heat race. He and Brian Shirley were running door to door on the front straightaway towards the checker flag when the pair got together. Despite damages, Clanton’s momentum kept him going, ultimately putting him in the redraw. Luckily, for Clanton the damage was mostly cosmetic so it was all hands on deck for him and his crew to get ready for the big show.
Frank Heckenast Jr. and his crew chief Axle Wicker helped put the nose of their #99jr machine on the Capital Race Car of Clanton’s, who was trying to avoid using his back up car at all costs because it would ultimately cost him his redraw position which was sixth. The crews hard work paid off as Clanton went on to make a steady run during the feature where he stayed among the top five every lap and finished fifth.
Chris Madden rounded out the podium at NAPA Wayne County Speedway night after making a last lap pass around young gun, Tyler Erb. Madden also set a new track record of 16.580 seconds.
Mansfield’s Bob Daugherty would take the lead from Jordan James on lap 4 of the Lowes Super Stock feature and then hold off Kyle Moore and Paul Holmes to notch his third win of the season. Moore would challenge the Char’s Cars, Hursh Racing Engines and McKenzie Concrete #21d of Daugherty in the middle part of the race but after banging off the guardrail in both corners, Moore would give up second to Holmes, who could not close in close enough to challenge Daugherty for the win. Tyler Nicely passed James with 3 circuits to go for fourth. Holmes and Moore posted the heat wins.
Racing continues at NAPA Wayne County Speedway next Saturday night, June 3rd with a regular program of Fisher Performance Sprints, Kar Connection Super Late Models, Lowes Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks.

After 2 weeks of rain outs, everyone was ready for racing at NAPA Wayne County Speedway on Pepsi night as the fans were treated to some great race action in all four divisions. The Kars Connection Super Late Models were the highlight class as they were competing in the Attica Raceway Park/ NAPA WCS Late Model Series. Two time series champ Ryan Markham and last years NAPA WCS champion Brad Malcuit would bring the field to the green flag with Malcuit taking the top spot. Markham would hold second until lap 4 when Matt Lux took over and on the next circuit, 6th starting Dave Hess Jr. would take third from Markham as JR Gentry, Doug Drown and Charlie Duncan followed. After a lap 7 caution for a spun Al Farris, the intensity of the race picked up as Malcuit would continue to lead with Lux and Hess Jr. going back and forth for second, right on Malcuit’s rear bumper. Markham, Gentry, Drown and Duncan all were bunched together changing positions on each lap as they were right behind the three front runners. Weaving their way through the back markers Hess Jr. would take second and rode the back of Malcuit just past the 1/2 way mark with Drown and Gentry moving into the top five on lap 17. On lap 22, Malcuit would slip high in turn three and Hess Jr. jumped on Malcuit’s bobble to take the lead with Lux also getting by Malcuit. The next lap would see the race’s second and last caution when Andrew Myers spun right before turn three and Drown and Gentry would hit each other trying to avoid the spun car with Drown receiving a flat tire in the contact and ending his run. Hess Jr. would hold off Lux for the win in the final laps with Malcuit taking third and Gentry and Markham filling out the top five. For Hess Jr., it would be his 1st win at NAPA WCS since his World of Outlaw Late Model win back in May of 2013 as the Waterford Pa. driver and his Car Smile Wiper Blades, Hess’ Garage and Salvage and Car Go Auto Parts #44 was tuning up for the World of Outlaw Late Model show in two weeks. Hess Jr., Markham and Gentry claimed the heat race wins.
After running a couple of seasons on the Arctic Cat All Star tour, West Salem’s Andrew Palker returned to NAPA WCS, where he was the track champion in 2012 and 2013, and would go flag to flag for the win in the Fisher Performance Sprint feature. With four caution flags sprinkled in through the race, Palker would always get a good restart on those as the battle was on for second. Early on in the race, Max Stambaugh, Dean Jacobs and TJ Michael would be the contenders for second but Michael’s ride would slow on lap four as he would retire to the pits. That would put Brad Haudenschild and 8th starting Danny Mumaw into the top five. After a lap nine caution for a spun Shawn Hubler, Mumaw would find an extra gear as he zoomed past Haudenschild on the restart and drive by Stambaugh on the next lap for third and take second from Jacobs on lap 17. Ralph Engle would bring out the last caution on lap 20 as Mumaw would get a chance at Palker’s #57 on the restart but once again Palker would be quick on the drop of the green flag and pull away for the win. Jacobs would hold off Haudenschild for third the final five laps as Stambaugh rounded out the top five. Jacobs, Stambaugh, Jordan Harble and Palker topped the heat races as Tyler Dunn and Clay Riney captured the last chance races for the 33 car field.
Jordan James took the outside front row starting position and set the pace for the opening 18 laps of the Lowes Super Stock feature as early on Gary Hensel Jr. would race his teammate for the lead but on lap seven, 5th starting Bob Daugherty of Mansfield would take second as Paul Holmes came from 12th to take third on the next circuit. The next ten laps would see Daugherty and Holmes go back and forth for second as James stayed out front. Going low in turn three, Daugherty would pull a slide job on James coming out of turn four as the white flag waved to take the lead. At the same time, Holmes slipped in that corner and allowed Gary Hensel Jr. to move into third. James’ car sputtered on the last lap that enabled Hensel Jr. and Holmes to get by as they trailed the Char’s Cars, McKenzie Concrete and Met’s #21d of Daugherty across the finish line. Frank Oriti was fifth. James and Hensel Jr. won the heat races.
The WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks started their season with Brad Hensel grabbing the opening lap lead from his 4th starting spot and set the pace for the first 8 circuits when his car sputtered and Jordan James would drive by but two laps later mechanical problems dropped James out of competition with Ashland’s Stephen Crowe taking the point with two laps to go. Crowe’s car had problems in the heat race and he had to start 19th in the feature and quietly worked his way through the field and park the Mid Ohio Steel Works, Hoffman Painting and Suburban RV #46 into the Summit Racing victory lane for the first time ever. Trailing Crowe across the finish line was John Doe, Doug Hensel, Wes Staley and Brad Hensel. James, Cory Staley and Katie Sams posted the heat wins.
It was also the first night of action for the drivers to compete for the year long Contingency Connection prizes.
Saturday, May 20th will see the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association roll into NAPA WCS along with the Kar Connection Super Late Models while the Lowes Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks will be racing the first of their ‘Summer Series’ races.
The World of Outlaw Craftsman Late Model Series will be in action at Orrville’s Historic Oval on Saturday, May 27 with the Lowes Super Stocks. Although it is only the middle of January, Jason and Kristin Flory have put together the tentative schedule for NAPA Wayne County Speedway for the 2017 racing season. Orrville’s Historic Oval will open up on Saturday, April 22 with the first of four visits by Tony Stewart’s Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions Sprints with the Super Stocks starting their point season. The ASCoC will return on Monday, June 19th for the annual speedweek show and the Duffy Smith Memorial. The Super Stocks will be in action that night also for a $1,000 to win feature, which will be 27 laps in length in memory of Danny Gardner. The third trip into NAPA WCS for the Arctic Cat All Stars will be the Pete Jacobs Memorial on Sunday, September 3rd which will be a $10,000 to win feature with the Super Stocks being the support class. Tony Stewart’s travelling group will close out NAPA Wayne County Speedway this season on Saturday, October 7th with the Super Stocks once again on the racing card.
In their second year of business, the Ohio Sprint Car Series will make five trips to Napa Wayne County Speedway with each race paying the winner $2,500. Each night that the OSCS is in action at NAPA WCS, which will be Saturday May 6th, June 10th, July 1st and 29th and then on August 19th, it will be a full program of Super Late Models, Crate Late Models , Super Stocks and Mini Stocks. The July 1st show will be Mid Season Championships for everyone except the Sprints, who will have their Mid Season championship on July 8th.
The Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association will make two trips to NAPA Wayne County Speedway as Saturday, May 20th and September 23rd (Blow Out Weekend) will be their race dates and will see a full program of racing.
For the first time since 2013, the World of Outlaw Late Models return to NAPA WCS for a $10.000 to win race on Saturday, May 27th. Dave Hess Jr. was the winner back in May 2013 while Darrell Lanigan picked up the win the year before. The Super Stocks will also race.
The 3rd annual Late Model Dirt Speedweek will roll in on Saturday, July 22nd for the Don Gross Memorial with all class’ in action.
The Attica Raceway Park/ NAPA Wayne County Speedway Late Model Series will be back for it’s 4th season. The NAPA WCS dates will be May 13th, as that winner will earn a spot in the WoO Late Model race, then again on July 8th and the final date will be August 19th.
The Super Stocks and the Mini Stocks will each have a ‘Summer Series’ again this season as May 20th, July 15th, August 5th and September 23rd (Blow Out Weekend) will be the dates. On those nights it will be increased purse plus a separate point fund for the ‘Summer Series’. The top three in points for the ‘Summer Series’ will get bonus money.

The Pines Golf Course will once again host the NAPA Wayne County Speedway’s annual banquet that will be held on Saturday, November 12th. The doors will open at 5 pm with dinner served at 6 pm and the award ceremony will begin at 7 pm. Tickets are on sale for $25 per person until October 15th. After that date, tickets will be $30 per person until November 3rd. No tickets will be sold after November 4th or at the door.
