DROWN, DAUGHERTY & BRAD HENSEL RETURN TO NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY’S VICTORY LANE; MARISA BECKETT BEST IN POWDER PUFF RACE

Orrville, Ohio
Saturday, August 12, 2017
By Mike Swanger
On a cool August night, Wooster’s Doug Drown collected his 4th win while Bob Daugherty of Mansfield posted his 6th victory while Brad Hensel of Smithville grabbed his 4th checkered flag as Millersburg’s Marisa Beckett won the Powder Puff feature.
At the start of the Kar Connection Super Late Model feature, Shane McLoughlin led the opening lap from his pole position starting spot but Larry Bellman slide by on lap two as Drown was up to third in two circuits from his 6th starting grid spot. Driving the Hall’s Auto Sales, Car Connection and Wooster Glass #240, Drown would take control of the race on lap three as McLoughlin and Bellman would battle for second. The caution flag waved on lap four when Ryan Markham and Matt Irey tangled on the front stretch as both would head to the pits. On the restart, Drown stayed out front as McLoughlin and Bellman dueled for second with Charlie Duncan, Cody Scott and J R Gentry were hot on their rear bumper. Duncan would power past Bellman on lap 14 for third and four circuits later Gentry slipped past Bellman for fourth as Dave Hornikel was pestering Scott for sixth. Drown was widening his lead over McLoughlin as Duncan was trying to close in on McLoughlin as Gentry ran fourth. With three laps to go Scott would secure fifth from Bellman as Hornikel capture sixth on the last lap. With the, win Drown expands his points lead with only two races left. McLoughlin finished second in his first trip of the year to ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’ as Duncan recorded his fifth top five of the season by finishing third as Gentry started 10th and moved to the 4th finishing spot as Scott took fifth from his 11th starting position. Craig Wolford, Markham and Drown won the heats as while Tony Musolino topped the last chance race.
Bob Daugherty and his Char’s Cars, McKenzie Concrete, and Metz Machine Shop #21d would go flag to flag for the Lowes Super Stock win and also increase his points lead. Dustin Daugherty stayed close for the first two laps but brought out the yellow flag when he suffered a flat tire on lap three moving Paul Holmes into second. Back to green, Gary Hensel Jr. would move into third past Mike Rose and then Holmes and Hensel Jr., the two heat winners, would race close and hard for second that would allow Daugherty to pull away. A couple of cautions in the latter part of the race kept the field close as Holmes and Hensel Jr. traded paint a couple of times with Hensel Jr. taking second with three laps to go to finish second for the 4th time this season. Holmes held on to third while Brandon Welker in his first visit to NAPA WCS, came from his 9th starting slot to grab fourth as Brandon Craver filled out the top five. The ‘Summer Series’ standings stay the same with Holmes, Hensel Jr. and Daugherty still the top three.
Thirty six WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks checked into the pits and when the night finished, Brad Hensel and his DJ Directional Services and JoyRide Transportation led all the way for his win and pull into the Summit Racing victory circle. Several cautions in the early stages of the race kept the field packed together but as the green flag waved for an extended time Hensel would set the pace as Wes Staley filled in the second position while Justin Cranmore and Jordan James would go back and forth for third. Cranmore made a last lap pass of James to claim third. Matt Miller moved up from starting 13th to fill out the top five. Cranmore, Michael Stewart, Brianna Hensel and Brad Hensel pocketed the heat wins as Corey Mills notched the last chance race. With his second place finish, Wes Staley takes the lead in the ‘Summer Series’ by three points over Matt Miller and by 5 points over Justin Cranmore.
The last ‘Summer Series’ points races for both the Lowes Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks will happen during the Ohio Dirt Blowout on Friday and Saturday, September 22nd and 23rd.
Marisa Beckett led seven of the eight laps to win the Powder Puff race as Tiffany Carter finished second out of the nine car field.
Next Saturday night, August 19th will see the Ohio Sprint Car Series back for their third and final visit of the year as Cole Duncan and Danny Smith have won the previous two OSCS races. It will also be the last race for the Attica Raceway Park/ NAPA Wayne County Speedway Super Late Model Series as Ryan Markham leads Doug Drown by 4 points and Cody Scott by 7 markers going into next week end’s action. The Lowes Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks will also be on the racing card. The rained out Kid’s Night will be included as all the Kid’s that had tickets from Saturday, August 5th need to bring their tickets back for the many prizes available.
The ‘Racer’s Rewards’ from the Contingency Connection were once again up for grabs for the drivers during the evening and for the yearly awards.

DANNY SMITH EXPANDS OSCS POINTS LEAD WITH WIN AT NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY; DOUG DROWN SCORES THIRD WIN; JORDAN JAMES A DOUBLE WINNER
Orrville, Ohio
Saturday, July 29, 2017
By Mike Swanger
For the second time this season, the Ohio Sprint Car Series (OSCS) stopped in at NAPA Wayne County Speedway and Chillicothe’s Danny Smith would take the win and add on to his 300+ career win on Santmyer Oil night. Driving the Kiger Signs, Smalley Excavating and Dean Knittel & Sons Auto Repair #4, would start on the pole but the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame driver would get shuffled back to third on the opening lap as Bryan Nuckles and Nick Patterson would motor into the top two spots. Before lap 2 was complete, a three car entanglement occurred in turn two as the red flag would appear as Troy Kingan would roll over. As the race went back to green, Nuckles would set the pace with Patterson right behind and going into turn three, Patterson would power past Nuckles using the low groove and came out of turn four with the lead as lap 8 was recorded. Patterson started to open up a sizable lead as Smith slipped past Nuckles on lap 11 for second with a three car battle between Brad Haudenschild, Andrew Palker and Tracy Hines taking place for 4th. Those three drivers would get past a fading Nuckles on lap 14 with Palker grabbing third followed by Haudenschild and Hines. Patterson had built up a half straightaway lead at one time as Smith ran second. As the two lap signal was given, Patterson encountered a couple of lapped cars in turn one as he made contact and spun, ending his night on the hook and giving Smith the lead back. On the restart, Smith held off Palker’s charge the last two laps for the win as Haudenschild finished up third while 13th starting Danny Mumaw, who changed a tire on the lap 2 red flag and went back to 16th, worked his way up to 7th when the caution flew for Patterson, blasted past Hines and Jordan Ryan the last two circuits to claim fourth. Hines and Ryan finished up fifth and sixth. Patterson, Smith and Haudenschild won the heats for the 23 car field of Sprints. The OSCS will return to ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’ on Saturday, August 19th.
Wooster’s Doug Drown powered into the lead from the outside front row and would lead all 25 laps of the caution filled Kar Connection Super Late Model feature and pull into the Summit Racing victory lane for the third time this season and take the points lead. During the racing action, Drown and his Hall’s Auto Sales, Kar Connection and Wooster Glass #240 would maintain a comfortable lead while teammate Charlie Duncan and Cody Scott hotly contested second place with Ryan Markham, Matt Irey and JR Gentry dueling for third. Gentry’s run was short lived as he came to a stop on lap five in turn four after jumping the cushion and losing his brakes. With Drown stretching his lead, Duncan, who was in a hot lap wreck, secured second place on lap 14 with Scott entrenched in third from that point on. Markham and Irey kept their battle alive with Irey, who started 9th, gaining control of fourth on lap 18 and holding off Markham the rest of the way. With Drown and Duncan finishing 1 and 2, it was an emotional finish as their car owner, Leroy Hall has been in the hospital with pneumonia. Gentry and Duncan posted the heat wins.
Jordan James came up big Saturday night as he would record two feature wins in two divisions as track historians are believing that is a first at NAPA WCS. In the Lowes Super Stock feature, Bob Daugherty would grab the lead with Tyler Thompson, Eric Eicholtz, and Dustin Daugherty racing for the lead while Gary Hensel Jr., Paul Holmes and James battled for fifth. Tight racing and contact between the leaders would send Eicholtz to the pits with a flat tire. Jordan went to the high side of the track on the restart and jumped into third and as Daugherty and Thompson were squeezing each other in the low groove, James, who started 7th, and his new Ugly Duck, Lorentz Lawn Care and Lochevale Farms #83 would take the high side in turn two and take the lead on lap 10. Dustin Daugherty came to a stop as he was running 4th with five laps to go ending his night. Gary Hensel Jr. made a big move on the return of the green flag, moving from fifth to third as he powered past Holmes and Thompson for third and then with three laps to go, overtook Bob Daugherty and finish second behind James. Daugherty, Holmes and Thompson would fill out the top five. Heat winners were Thompson, Mike Rose and Bob Daugherty. For James, it was his first Super Stock win
In the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stock feature, James, who won back on July 15th with a brand new car, went back to his old #83 and started ninth, slowly worked his way through the field as Michael Stewart would set the early pace with points leader Cory Staley riding his rear bumper. Staley would duck underneath Stewart for the lead at the crossed flags mark as James was fifth behind Roger Olar and Wes Staley. The races only caution flag waved with four laps to go and when the race went back to green, James passed Stewart for third and closed in on Cory Staley and Olar. With the checkered flag raised, those three were three wide coming out of turn four, James and his Brad’s Auto Body, Ugly Duck and Lochevale Farms was inches ahead of Olar who was inches in front of Staley as they crossed the finish line. Doug Hensel would swipe fourth away from Stewart in the last four circuits. Claiming the heat wins were Stewart, James and Doug Hensel.
All the racer’s were competing for the ‘Racer Rewards’ program thanks to the Contingency Connection.
Saturday, August 5th will be Kid’s Night with many activities and prizes for the kids as the Fisher Performance Sprints and the Kar Connection Super Late Models will be in action while the Lowes Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks will run the third race of the ‘Summer Series’ along with regular points.

MARKHAM ‘GOES BACK’ TO NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY VICTORY LANE; SCHROYER AND JAMES NAIL DOWN 1st WINS
Orrville, Ohio
Saturday, July 15, 2017
By Mike Swanger
Although he is leading the Kar Connection Super Late Model points and has a win this season, Ashland’s Ryan Markham decided to pull out last years race car and it worked for his 2nd win of the season while Coshocton’s Matt Schroyer made his first trip of the season to ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’ a successful one by winning the Lowes Super Stock feature and Loudonville’s Jordan James rolled out a brand new car and captured the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stock feature on Malcuit’s Tavern night.
Charlie Duncan would set a torrid pace for the first of the Kar Connection Super Late Model feature 8 circuits but mechanical woes drove him to the pits and brought out the caution flag. Larry Bellman would take the lead on the restart but before that lap could get completed, a lot of contact was made in the middle of the pack in turn two that would send Brad Malcuit’s car end over end and coming down on the cars roof on top of the retaining tires on the back stretch as Malcuit would be ok. As the green flag flew again, Bellman held off 4th starting Markham for one lap as the H &T Demolition, Page Excavating and Innovative Graphics 5m took over on lap 10 and pulled away. Behind Bellman, Matt Lux, JR Gentry, Doug Drown and Cody Scott had a tight race going on for third. Gentry would jump the cushion in turn three, getting up on two wheels and losing two places on lap 12. Drown, who started ninth, would power past Lux on lap 14 and then take second from Bellman four laps later and then try to track down Markham, who had a straightaway lead. Drown was closing in but with three laps to go, slipped in the cushion going into turn one and could not make a late run on Markham to finish second. At the same time Drown slipped, Lux moved past Bellman for third as Cody Scott took fifth. Duncan and Bellman scored the heat wins.
Brandon Craver grabbed the lead from the outside pole position of the Lowes Super Stock feature and after a caution on lap two, the restart would see the red flag come out for a five car pile up in turn two that had the track blocked. Dustin Daugherty got sideways and collected four other cars including points leader Bob Daugherty, Eric Eicholtz, Gary Hensel Jr. and Matt Schroyer with Hensel Jr and Schroyer the only two able to continue and getting their positions back. With the green flag back out, Schroyer and his Four Seasons Tanning, Tri Form Products and Innovative Graphics #15s would take the point from Craver with Paul Holmes moving into second on the next lap. Two circuits later, Hensel Jr. took over third and the three front runners pulled away from the rest of the field. Holmes would keep the pressure on Schroyer and took the lead briefly on lap 14 but Schroyer motored back into the lead on the next lap and then held off Holmes by a little more than a car length at the finish. Hensel Jr. finished third while Bubba Smith took 4th from Craver as they ran side by side the last half of the feature. Bob Daugherty and Smith topped the heat races.
The WQKT 104.5 Mini Stock main saw Billy Parsons power his way into the lead from his 4th starting position and set the pace for the opening two laps but he went pit side on lap three as Jason St. John inherited the point as the race stayed green. St John held the lead for the next two laps which were interrupted by a red flag. A couple of cars got together in turn two and that would send points leader Corey Staley end over end and clearing the tires on the back stretch, almost at the same spot the Malcuit ended up. Other than some bruises and bumps, Staley was ok. On the restart and driving the brand new Ugly Duck, Lochevale Farms and Brad’s Auto Body #83, James grabbed the lead and then kept St. John at bay to win his first win of the season. Dustin Bedlion started on the pole, dropped back to 7th at one time, recovered to finish third ahead of Matt Miller and Michael Stewart. Winning the heat races were Miller, St. John and Parsons.
Both the Lowes Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks were racing the second of their ‘Summer Series’ points along with regular points and all the drivers were racing for the Contingency Connection ‘Racer Rewards’ prizes.
Fourteen Vintage American Race Cars were on hand for display and they also performed on the track as John Lawhorn won their heat race with Chuck Harshman winning the feature over Jim McDermott and Lawhorn.
Next Saturday night, the Kar Connection Super Late Models will highlight the evening with the third annual ‘Don Gross Memorial’ paying $4,000 to win. There will also be the ‘Hans Gross Dash’ that will be a seven lap dash for seven cars paying the winner $700. The Fisher Performance Sprints return and the Lowes Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks also in action.
