Orrville, Ohio

By Mike Swanger
The 5th annual Ohio Dirt Blowout presented by the Kar Connection is now in the books with some great racing action recorded at NAPA Wayne County Speedway. For the Kar Connection Super Late Models, their action started on Friday night as Mike Davis would set fast time at 16.967 and J R Gentry and Doug Drown would win the heat races but Gentry did not cross the scales after his heat race giving the win to Shane McLoughlin and Gentry would have to start on the tail of the feature. In Saturday’s action, Drown would win the Tye Twarog Motorsports Hans Gross Memorial Dash to start on the pole of the 75 lap Don Gross Memorial. As the feature took the green flag, outside front row starter Mike Davis would take the lead for the opening 12 laps when the caution would fly. On the restart, Drown would make the pass for the lead as Davis would make a couple of attempts to regain the lead to no avail. An intense battle was going on for third place between Ryan Markham, Larry Bellman and Shane McLoughlin. Following a caution on lap 19, Markham edged into second past Davis and on the next lap, Bellman took third from Davis. For the next few laps, Bellman and Davis would exchange third place several times as Drown and Markham pulled away from the field. For the 1st 50 laps, caution laps would count as laps raced and lap 48 would be the last of those as the race would go caution free the next 17 circuits with Drown keeping a three car length lead over Markham as Davis ran third with Charlie Duncan getting past both Bellman and McLoughlin. The field would stay status quo until lap 70 when the caution reappeared and bunch the field together. With the race back to green, 2017 track champ, Drown and his Hall’s Auto Sales, Wooster Glass and ABR Farms #240 was hugging the bottom groove through both ends of the track with Markham on his rear bumper. As the two leaders came out of turn four to complete lap 72, Markham tagged Drown and sent him spinning to bring out the yellow flag as Markham was charged for the caution that would send him to the back of the lead lap as Drown would retain his lead. As the green flag waved again, Drown would pull away as the Wooster driver would win his second Ohio Dirt Blowout race. On that final restart, Bellman powered past Davis for second for his best finish of the season. With two rounds left, Duncan would take third from Davis and on the final lap, Markham would drop Davis to fifth.
The Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association made their second visit of the season to ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’ with Tyler Gunn taking his pole position spot and grab the lead with Jordan Ryan in pursuit until lap 6 when 2017 track champion Andrew Palker would move into the runner up spot. Brad Haudenschild and Danny Mumaw would motor past Ryan on lap 9. Palker of West Salem, would track down Gunn and take the lead on lap 13. Mumaw, who won the OVSCA race back in May and had started 12th tonight, powered past Gunn on lap 18 for second. The race came to stop on lap 21 when Mitch Harble took a tumble in turn four. as the race went back to green, Palker and his El Campesino Restaurant and King Inspection #57x would pull away and collect his third win of the season and 1st Ohio Dirt Blowout win. Mumaw finished second with Gunn, Haudenschild and Ryan rounding out the top five. Clay Riney picked up the last chance win and would finish 6th after starting 16th and coming off his Never Ever Won win on Friday night. Jason Dolick, Ryan and Palker scored the heat wins.
Action started Friday night for the Lowes Super Stocks and by the end of the week end, Mansfield’s Kyle Moore swept the week end as he would set fast time at 20.011 seconds and win his heat race on Friday, win the Mars Trucking dash and lead all 25 laps of the McKenzie Concrete feature on Saturday for his third win of the season at NAPA WCS and his 1st Ohio Dirt Blowout victory. Driving the Kryptonite Race Cars, Keller Flooring and Tim Arnold Motorsports #11, Moore would hold off early challenges from Paul Holmes for the first four circuits and 2017 track Champion Bob Daugherty would try his hand at taking the lead on laps 5 through 8 and then John Wilson would try his luck at grabbing the lead. Wilson would edge ahead a couple of times in turns one and two but could never stay ahead of Moore when they passed the flag stand. Wilson would finish second as Daugherty and Holmes flip flopped third a couple of times in the closing laps with Daugherty winning that battle. Gary Hensel Jr. worked his way to fifth from his 18th starting spot. Daugherty and Wilson joined Moore in the heat race victory lane. Chris Albright scored the last chance race. With his 4th place finish, Holmes locked up the ‘Summer Series’ championship with Gary Hensel Jr. and Bob Daugherty finishing second and third and will receive their awards at the banquet.
After being close a couple of times this season, Canton’s Wes Staley finally found the Summit Racing victory circle as he went flag to flag for his first win of the season and that also clinched the ‘Summer Series’ crown for him in the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stock action. Driving the Tires & More, Finish Line Motors, and the Dalton Dari-ette #73s, Staley would fend off early runs by Sean Rush and Brad Hensel. Rush would drop out midway through the Wayne Newbury & Dirt Track Weekly feature with mechanical issues as Friday nights winner, Dale Beckett would be joined by Jordan James to battle Brad Hensel for second. As those three dueled for second, Staley was able to open up a good size lead and cruise to the win. Beckett would take second as Hensel was third followed by James, After winning the first of the two last chance races, Jerry Adkins would fill out the top five from his 17th starting spot. Brianna Hensel won the second last chance race as Billy Parsons, James, Brian Dawson and Wes Staley posted the heat wins. Matt Miller and Brad Hensel finished second and third in the ‘Summer Series’ and will also get their awards at the banquet.
One last night of racing is left for the 2017 season as the Arctic Cat All Stars return on Saturday October 7th for a $5,000 to win event. In four All Star races at Napa Wayne County Speedway, four different drivers have won, those being Sheldon Haudenschild, Kyle Larson, Joey Saldana and Caleb Helms. The Lowes Super Stocks will also be in action for the final time.
The Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, November 11th at the Pines Golf Course banquet room. Watch for details later this week for the banquet at www.waynecountyspeedway.com

CLAY RINEY SCULPTURES NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY NEVER EVER WON VICTORY; DALE BECKETT BEST IN MINI STOCK FEATURE
Orrville, Ohio
September 22, 2017
By Mike Swanger
On the opening night of the two night, 5th annual Ohio Dirt Blowout at NAPA Wayne County Speedway, presented by the Kar Connection, 17 year old Clay Riney grabbed the lead on lap five of the Never Ever Won (NEW) feature and never looked back to win his 1st Sprint car feature. Pole sitter and second heat winner Brandon Conkle would set the pace for the opening four laps as Riney would move into second from his 5th starting spot with 7th starting Sam Ashworth right behind Riney on the second circuit. The caution flag waved on lap two as Ryan Fredericks bounced off the turn one wall and stopped. As the green flag reappeared, Conkle, Riney, Ashworth and 1st heat winner Cody Gallogly were bumper to bumper. Riney and Ashworth would go side by side for second for the next two laps with Riney securing second on lap four. Working lap five, leader Conkle would get sideways to much in turn two and come to a stop with everyone getting by with no contact. On the restart, Riney would bolt out to a big lead and the Wellsburg, West Virginia driver had more than a straightaway lead over Ashworth and Gallogly. Disaster would happen to Ashworth with less than two laps to go as he smacked the guardrail in turn two and flipped to bring out the red flag. Riney and his Wahl’s Heating and Cooling #c1 would drive away from Gallogly on the restart to collect his 1st win as those two drivers were the only drivers on the lead lap when the checkered flag waved. Lance Webb finished third as Kris Davis and Brian Benson filled out the top five.
Brad Hensel popped into the lead from his third starting spot to lead the first six laps of the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stock feature but Millersburg’s Dale Beckett was picking his way through from his 7th starting grid position and over powered his way past Hensel on lap 7 and then hold off Hensel’s last lap charge to park his #4 in the Summit Racing victory circle for his 1st win of the season. Sean Rush outdueled Billy Parsons for third as track champion Cory Staley was fifth. Heat winners were Matt Miller, Colton St. John, Sean Rush and Dale Beckett as Jordan James and Stephen Crowe topped the last chance races.
Night two of the 5th annual Ohio Dirt Blowout presented by the Kar Connection will see the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association in for a $2,500 to win feature with the Kar Connection Super Late Models racing for $4,000 to win Don Gross Memorial and a $700 to win Hans Gross Memorial dash. The Lowes Super Stocks will running for the $1,000 to win feature plus a Dash for Cash and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks will have $1,200 to the winner of their main event. The Super Stocks and Mini Stocks will have their last night of the ‘Summer Series’ races points determined also.

CALEB HELMS EARNS $10,000 FOR 1st EVER ARCTIC CAT ALL STAR VICTORY DURING NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY’S PETE JACOBS MEMORIAL; MOORE CRUISES TO 2nd WIN

Orrville, Ohio
Sunday, September 3, 2017
By Tyler Altmeyer & Mike Swanger
Finally etching his name in the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions history books, Findlay’s Caleb Helms is an Arctic Cat All Star main event winner, earning $10,000 during the annual Pete Jacobs Memorial at NAPA Wayne County Speedway. The victory, undoubtedly the largest payday of his young career, was a 1st ever during Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions competition.
The pilot of the Big Jerk Premium Jerky/Helms and Sons Excavating/Ferguson/Tommy Tire Sales/#17 charged from the inside of row five to claim his spot on top of the feature podium, withstanding multiple charges from former Arctic Cat All Star champion, Tim Shaffer and Cole Duncan during the closing circuits.
“Man… I’m really happy to be here, ” Caleb Helms said with relief in victory lane. “I couldn’t have done it without my family, my dad, my grandpa, my wife, my boys. I’ve been believing I could be here. It has been a long time coming it feels like, but I’m so happy we are finally here.”
Joey Saldana and Chad Kemenah led the feature field to green on Sunday night at NAPA Wayne County Speedway as Saldana earned the early advantage, leading Kemenah and Danny Mumaw by the flag stand for the 1st time. Five cautions interrupted the first eight circuits of the 35 lap main event. During that time, Saldana remained in control, keeping the tight battle for second through fourth Helms, Mumaw and Kemenah in his rear view mirror. During the lap eight restart, Mumaw, who worked by Helms the circuit prior, drove under Saldana for the lead in turn one. Despite Saldana’s attempt to retake the top spot in turns three and four with a slide job, Mumaw maintained in command. All momentum would soon be lost once again as the caution flag reappeared on lap nine. Mumaw led the feature field back to green with Saldana right on his tail tank. the Wooster driver attempted to run away from the field, but Saldana never allowed it, keeping just a few car lengths between himself and Mumaw. As the pair reached the back of the field, Mumaw’s lead diminished completely, soon finding himself on the back bumper of lapped traffic with Saldana on his heels. Unfortunately for Mumaw, his lead would end in traffic as contact with a lapped car sent him skating into the infield off of the back stretch and also collecting Saldana. Helms, who battled his way into third just before the incident, inherited the top spot.
Green flag conditions returned with Helms now in control over Shaffer and Cole Duncan. Utilizing the very top side of the speedway, Helms was able to maintain momentum over the other front runners, but not without some added pressure from the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer. When Helms and Shaffer entered traffic on lap 25, the gap between the two disappeared completely, battling nearly side by side for 4 circuits from laps 26 to 29. Luckily for Helms, caution flags flew once again, ultimately setting up a clear track and clean air the remaining distance.
“That late caution definitely helped us,” Caleb Helms explained. “I felt like we were finally starting to hit stride. I was able to get my wing back a little bit further and figure out where I needed to enter the corners. Andy Potter did a great job with this car. We keep learning night in and night out.”
In the Lowes Super Stock feature, Charlie Duncan would set the pace for the opening 6 laps from his pole position, but mechanical issues with the #16 on lap seven ended Duncan’s run. Up until that point, it was a multi car battle for second as Mansfield’s Kyle Moore had moved into that position on lap two with track champion Bob Daugherty, Paul Holmes, Trae Schonauer, John Wilson, Todd Werntz and Jordan James all dueling for top five positioning. During the caution for Duncan, Schoenauer developed a flat tire and went to the pits to change it. Driving the Kryptonite Race Cars/Keller Flooring/ Tim Arnold Motorsports #11, Moore would start to expand his lead as the competition started to weed it self out as Daugherty would pull off on lap 12 and two circuits later, James would pull into the infield. Moore had stretched his lead out to almost a straight away ahead of Wilson, who had taken second from Daugherty on the lap seven restart. Holmes was in third as Werntz and Jim Nicely battled back and forth for the 4th position. As the checkered flag waved, Moore went to the Summit Racing victory lane for the second time this season at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’ with Wilson in second followed by Holmes, Werntz and Nicely. Heat winners were Wilson, Moore and Daugherty.
The next action at NAPA Wayne County Speedway will be on Friday and Saturday, September 22nd & 23rd for the 5th annual Ohio Dirt Blow out. Go to www.waynecountyspeedway.com for more information on this event. The Arctic Cat All Stars will return on Saturday, October 7th to end the racing season at NAPA WCS.

Orrville, Ohio

By Mike Swanger
In front of a big crowd on Hall’s Auto Sales night along with the finish of Kid’s Night, Cale Conley of Vienna WV would take the lead on lap 4 of the Ohio Sprint Car Series and then hold off a fast closing Cole Duncan in last three laps for his 1st win at Napa Wayne County Speedway. Trevor Baker set the pace for the first three laps before Conley placed his #7k into the top position as hometown driver Dean Jacobs took over second on lap nine and then Duncan and fast qualifier Carson Macedo would move Baker back to fifth on the next circuit. Macedo and Baker would go back and forth for fourth until lap 20 when Macedo took control of fourth for good. Conley would build up a half straight away lead over Duncan, who took second from Jacobs on lap 12, but with lap traffic looming late in the race, Duncan closed in looking for his second OSCS win of the season at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’. As they went into turn three for the final time Conley dropped to the low groove to block Duncan’s move for the lead and win. Jacobs would hold off Macedo’s late race charge to claim third while Brandon Wimmer edged past Baker with two laps to go for fifth. Duncan, Jacobs, Conley and Nick Patterson bested the heat races while NAPA WCS drivers Tyler Dunn, Jason Dolick, Danny Mumaw and Troy Kingan transferred out of the last chance race in that order.
For the Kar Connection Super Late Models, it was the last night of the Attica Raceway Park/ Napa Wayne County Speedway Series and at the drop of the green flag, Charlie Duncan would out race Larry Bellman into turn one for the lead as Wooster’s J R Gentry sat on Duncan’s rear bumper and on the next circuit would take the point from Duncan and never looked back to put the McDonalds of Wayne County, BCI Buckeye Division and El Campesino Restaurant #14 into the Summit Racing winners circle for the second time this season. From his 7th starting position, Doug Drown pulled into third in front of Cody Scott on lap three and then the two #240’s of Hall’s Auto Sales would battle back and forth for the next several laps before Drown secured second at the halfway mark. A caution with three laps to go bunched the field together but Gentry would pull away from Drown on the restart to solidify the win. Duncan would score a third place finish with Scott in fourth while heat two winner Bellman passed Ben Mott on the final restart to claim fifth. In the battle for the ARP/WCS title, Ryan Markham would start the night with an eight point lead but with Drown winning the heat race and the 5 points bonus for the heat win, it would be just 3 point advantage at the start of the feature. Just two laps into the feature, Markham would pull off with mechanical issues and with Drown finishing second, Drown would claim the ARP/ WCS title, his second in four years. He would also claim the Innovative Graphics Most Heat wins award by winning four heat races in the Series. Markham will finish second and Cody Scott third in the two track series.
In the Lowes Super Stock class, the winner of the previous weeks feature must start in the highest redraw position providing they make the redraw in their heat race and for the third time this season, Mansfield’s Bob Daugherty has turned the trick as he came from his eighth starting spot and took the lead on lap 7 and went on to collect his 7th win of the year. Dustin Daugherty would set the pace for the opening four laps of the caution filled feature as Paul Holmes took control for the next two circuits before Bob Daugherty would place the Char’s Cars, McKenzie Concrete and Gioninni’s Pizza #21d out front. Dustin Daugherty and Holmes would duel for second but Dustin would drop off the pace with mechanical issues and on lap 10, Holmes would spin in turn four, giving second place to Jordan James. The final half of the feature, James would hound Bob Daugherty but could never make the move to get by and would take home second. Holmes would work his way back through the field to finish third while Jim Nicely ran fourth. Gary Hensel Jr. was challenging for the lead early in the race, would have to change a tire during a caution and came back to fill out the top five. Bubba Smith and Bob Daugherty scored the heat wins.
Extra incentive was on the line for the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks as Directional Hydraulics kicked in a $300 bonus to the winner and Wooster’s Doug Hensel and his M & S Concrete #18 grabbed the lead from Michael Stewart on lap two of the feature and never looked back although 8th starting Brad Hensel closed quickly in the last two laps of the caution free race. Jordan James would finish third as Stewart would drop to fourth and Dustin Bedlion came from 14th to take fifth. Heat winners were Doug and Brad Hensel, Taylor Mazzoleni and Stewart while Randy Gibson topped the last chance race followed by Brent Boreman, Sean Rush and Jess Hensel.
The Contingency Connection ‘Racer’s Rewards’ for the drivers were up for grabs once again for the night and for the season with nearly $100,000 for the season available to the drivers.
Next Saturday night, August 26th, it will be Season Championship for all four class’ with double points on the line to decide the 2017 NAPA Wayne County Speedway track champions.
