With a heavy right foot, Shaw a shoe-in for Wayne County Speedway’s Modified championship

ORRVILLE – Colton Shaw will once again be wearing the Flynn’s Tire & Service Center’s Modified division crown – for the second consecutive season – in the O’Reilly Auto Parts’ Chase for the Championship at Wayne County Speedway.

After all, the only thing the 23-year-old has to do is sign into the pit building Saturday afternoon and the title is his. Sounds like a simple enough formula, right?
Think again.

Shaw will be gunning for a career-high 12th overall victory – and his sixth at WCS – and the Ohio UMP Modified points championship as well. Shaw trails southern-Ohio-based Jimmy Lennex Jr. In the year-long standings in which a drivers top 30 results are tabulated.

“We will be racing to win, heck yeah,” said Shaw. “We’ve only raced 24 times, but we’ll get to 30, but winning races is all we set out to do at the start of the season. We really don’t set a goal for wins or a championship, but if we are going to commit to running (WCS), we may as well win that, too.”

Shaw’s family-backed Mark Bush chassis, Malcuit-Mullins race engines General Lee 01, is one of the most focused teams in the pit area at any given site. And a little help from people in the know doesn’t hurt, either.

“Kyle and Brad Moore do our wraps (Platinum Designs in Mansfield), and they also give us a base starting point for our set-ups,” Shaw added. “(Bush) only builds about 10 cars a year, and we actually bought this on a Facebook page. It’s just my dad and myself working on it, and l couldn’t possibly do any of this without him and mom and each and every person who helps us out.”

In just his third full year in a Modified, Shaw’s only goal is to get better – and win more races.

“We really have no other plans right now, it’s just one race at a time,” he added. “I want to get better and be able to race with the top guys, but that will come with more experience. We’ve had just two mechanical failures all season, but those bad nights eat at us all week and keeps us motivated.”

Regardless of championships won or future plans, one thing is certain; Chances are you’ll see Shaw in a victory lane near you.

Fans can see Shaw and the rest of the Fast Five Series competitors on display Saturday night at the speedway with warm-ups at 6 and racing at 7:15.
