Chris Myers wins the Rick Susong Memorial!

ORRVILLE – By almost every measure, Saturday nights field of cars was the strongest and most stout of the 2022 season at the O’Reilly Auto Parts at Wayne County Speedway. And the 3-8-mile oval was once again up to the task as well. Chris Myers became just the second repeat winner this season in the Pine Tree Towing and Recovery Sprint Cars by leading every lap of the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association/Rick Susong Memorial headliner, while Ryan Markham stayed red-hot by besting a talented Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model contingent in picking up his sixth overall victory. Kyle Moore doubled up for the second week in a row by claiming both the McKenzie Concrete Super Stock and Elite Munitions Modified mains with Chaz Dawson becoming just the fourth JoyRide Mini Stock driver to visit the Summit Racing Victory Lane with his first win of the campaign. Myers, who last won at WCS on May 28, inched closer to Henry Malcuit in the chase to the season championship by leading all 25 laps from his front-row starting slot. Myers held off Kory Crabtree, also a former winner at WCS, Tyler Street and Ricky Peterson, both feature winners at WCS in 2022, and western Pennsylvania-based youngster Leyton Wagner in fifth at the stripe. Crabtree, second in the OVSCA point standings behind Bryan Nuckles, dogged Myers the entire race, eventually pulling to within a few car lengths in heavy traffic before a caution waved on lap 15. Myers once again set sail when the green replaced the yellow until lap 22 when Joe Adorjan left the ballpark by tumbling over the turn 2 guardrail. Adorjan was unscathed but was done for the evening while running in 15th before the crash. Myers survived one last ditch effort on the restart from Crabtree, but held on as Street, Peterson, Wagner, and Malcuit diced it up behind the familiar Tony Popa-owned yellow 38K. Malcuit crossed the stripe sixth, with Skyler Gee, Andrew Palker, Jamie Myers, and Nuckles completing the top 10. “We’ve struggled some recently, but this a tough place,” said Myers. “The track is so fast and if you can win here, you’re doing something. We hit the lapped cars just right as they stayed mostly on the bottom. Everything worked in our favor tonight.” A scary incident took place in in the third heat, however, as Wyatt Zimmerman, who timed in third quick in qualifying, bicycled in turn 4 before his Shayne Mixon-owned 51 catapulted over the four-tiered guardrail exiting the turn and flipping into the catch fence. Following a few anxious moments, the WCS regular climbed from his battered machine shaken but uninjured. A delay of an hour followed as track crew members repaired the protective barriers. Shane McLoughlin bolted to the early lead in the 25-lap Late Model main with Ryan Markham and Doug Drown, two of the top competitors in the speedway’s long history, in tow. McLoughlin led until lap eight before Markham took the point on a restart with Drown following on lap 14. The duo raced nose-to-tail the remaining 11 circuits with Markham hanging on for his fourth WCS victory of the season. McLoughlin finished third with a hard-charging Brett Bee fourth from 10th, and Dave Hornikel riding home fifth. Parkersburg’s Tyler Carpenter stopped the clocks just short of Chris Madden’s track record in qualifying with a lap of 15.623. “I’m not sure if a few of the guys had softer tires on than me, but it seemed it took me awhile to get going,” said Markham. “There was a lot of yellows, but my car got better as the race went on. The race track was awesome.” The Modifieds hit the track next, and the 20-lap main event was worth the price of the admission. Allan Baker, Nathan Loney, Kyle Moore, and Colton Shaw occupied the first two rows on the start, with the foursome breaking away from the pack. Although Baker retired from the event early, Loney, Shaw, and Moore waged a torrid battle throughout with Loney leading the first eight laps. The trio were side-by-side-by-side through lap 10, splitting lapped cars in the process. Moore finally took the lead on lap 10, but Shaw and Loney’s duel was just intensifying. Shaw eventually raced home in second, with Loney, who momentarily was off the pace on lap 13, rallied to finish a close third followed by Bud Watson and DJ Cline. “Wow, that was just crazy,” said Moore in victory lane beside his TA Perrine 16. “This place has been so fast, and that was a battle out there tonight. I love racing for (TA) and we will keep racing this thing as long as he wants me in it.” Moore immediately hopped into Bob Daughtery’s 21D Super Stock, retrofitted with a throwback 2000 paint scheme, and took aim on overall win number 14 of the season from his eighth starting spot. Moore took the lead on lap five from Rob Melzer and never looked back in outdistancing Paul Holmes, Melzer, Don Baney Jr, and Braden Tucke, who recovered from the tail after ducking into the Hutch Xtreme Photos work area on lap four. “Again, this race track has been really fast, and there’s a lot of guys racing hard in this division,” said Moore. “We’re just on a roll in this thing and hopefully we can continue it.” The Mini Stock finale was up next, and just like every feature race this season was the outcome wasn’t decided until the closing laps, or in Saturday night’s case, the final turn. Kyle Petit took the early lead followed by Travis Hutton and Dawson. Early contenders Justin Cranmore and Jordan James both went to the Hutch Xtreme work area on lap five while running in the top five, as Dawson moved into second shortly after. Dawson ran nose to tail with Petit the rest of the way, until taking the high side around turns 3 and 4 on the final lap to record his first win of the season. Petit, Hutton, Doug Hensel, and Anthony Collins, the only driver other than Hensel and Cranmore to record a victory in the series before Saturday, rounded out the top five. “This is awesome,” Dawson said. “We have had such bad luck here that we decided to bounce around and run some other tracks, but we haven’t raced much at all in the last couple of years. I love 20 minutes from here, and to finally get a win at our hometown track is just all around special.” WCS will be back in action on Saturday with another edition of the Fast Five series with the Danny Gardner Memorial for Super Stocks highlighting the program. The always popular Kids Night at the speedway is also on tap.
