HOFFMAN & NICELY WRAP UP SUMMER NATIONALS WITH WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY VICTORIES

By Matt Skipper & Mike Swanger
Owning the title as the all-time DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified National winner, Nick Hoffman has waited since running late models in 2018 to visit Victory Lane for the 1st time. On Sunday night, the Mooresville NC driver took his Tye Twarog racing machine to the win in the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Late Model finale at Wayne County Speedway for redemption after losing the same win last year to a flat tire. Polesitter Trey Mills, front row starter Jason Feger and 2024 champion Tyler Erb swapped lanes through slide jobs on the opening three laps, with Feger taking the lead as Erb took second and Mills third. Feger held the #1 at bay until the first caution flew on lap 14 for a Mills’ flat tire. On the restart, Erb attempted a slide job on Feger, but the Bloomington IL. Driver kept the lead as Hoffman drove under Erb Around turns 3 & 4 to take second as Mark Whitener crossed Erb in turn one by driving the cushion, then slicing to the bottom to outrun him down the backstretch. At the front, Feger continued to show the way as Hoffman tried to contend for second and Zack Mitchell in third. In the closing 15 circuits, Hoffman moved up from the bottom lane and found momentum on the top as he made steady gains on Feger. As Feger suffered from an ailing right rear tire, Hoffman’s NOS Energy Drink #9 showed the way around the cushion as Mitchell followed. On lap 35, Feger’s right rear tire came apart as Hoffman, Mitchell and Ryan Gustin led the field back to the final restart. Hoffman withstood Mitchell’s final attempts at the lead by keeping his machine glued to the cushion for his first career Hell Tour win. Though Feger ended the night in 15th, it was enough to secure his second over all title while Mitchell finished second to lock up the week five points championship
As the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Late Models crowned a new champion at Wayne County Speedway, Tyler Nicely padded his points lead in the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals. The Owensboro KY driver got his third consecutive win of the season Sunday night after exemplifying his season of dominance over his UMP Modified competitors. On the opening lap, Nicely split through the middle lane as he, Kyle Moore and Nate Young made up the top three. Nicely controlled the pace aboard the #25 Elite Chassis machine at the top of the 3/8 mile track’s cushion while Moore and Young dueled for second as Michael Altobelli joined the mix in the fight for the podium. The three drivers helped Nicely to widen his lead as Altobelli took over second on lap 13. When the final caution flew on lap19, Nicely outran the field into turn one as Altobelli tried one last attempt at Nicely but could not get close enough to make a move as Nicely picked up his 8th win of the year and 19th of his career in the Summit Modified Nationals
In the Canton Glass House Super Stocks feature, Brandon Morrow and Paul Holmes went side by side in the opening laps before the Wooster driver took control of the race in his 89 Homes, Jake’s Electric and Dan Weaver #c9 just midway in the race to capture his 1st win of the season. Holmes would bring out the red flag on lap 9 when he went off the backstretch and go nose first into the retaining tires. He was ok. Colton Cook would charge into second on the restart but could no make a run on Morrow in the closing laps.
Wes Staley set the pace from his pole position starting place in the JoyRide Transport Mini Stock main as points leader Johnny Bruce gave chase but could not track down the Dalton based McBreaty Chiropractic, Gentry Dumpster Service and Wilfong Scrap #73 as Staley locked up his second win of the season. Cody Musselman and David Potter closed in on Bruce in the closing laps and finished behind in third and fourth
Racing continues this Saturday at Wayne County Speedway with the Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks and for the second time this year, the Mod Lites will be in action. Gates open at 3 pm and racing at 7 pm.
