Mansfield Ohio - Management of Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway formally announced details of the 2009 “Sideways in the Dirt” racing season during the prestigious 43rd Annual Cleveland Auto Rama this past weekend to a wide variety of automotive enthusiasts. This major event which is also sponsored by Federated Auto Parts showcased some of the nations most exotic and custom cars including Clint Coffman’s immaculate Barry Wright Chassis / Malcuit Racing Engines number 2c dirt Late Model that will be in competition every week at the ultra fast 3/8ths mile clay oval located in Orrville Ohio. Coffman had this to say about the show; “The response to our display was terrific. NASCAR great Ken Schrader checked the car out from nose to tail and of course he loved it but a lot of people had no idea what a dirt Late Model is all about. It was great talking to those folks and showing them what makes this car work and I think many of them will pay Wayne County Speedway a visit this year in order to see for themselves what the excitement is all about.”

Boasting a rich history and an even brighter future, Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway is home to a wealth of talent steeped with tradition. As always our primary focus will be on regular Saturday night dirt racing entertainment in order to spotlight the high level of competition this area has to offer. Speedway owner Ernie Coffman confirmed; “ I’ve watched many generations pass through these gates over the years. Right now I see grand fathers teaching their grand kids to become better drivers. It’s just amazing and it‘s happening to me right now. It’s much more than just a race at Wayne County, it’s become family tradition. This is the kind of racing I want to see.” Familiar names like Wayne Maffett Jr., Ryan Markham, Tim Hunter, Troy Anderson, and Broc Martin are expected to line up every week while many big name touring drivers seeking a challenge often visit. The Cruisers are a recent addition to the lineup and will be a completely factory stock rear wheel drive race car aimed toward hobby racers, a search for a title sponsor has only begun.

Sixteen points paying “Chase to the Championship” events fill most of the 2009 schedule and will culminate with a January 30 Awards Banquet at Ashland University. Conley Claims WCS Opener
April 18, 2009

Orrville OH - Opening day can quickly become a nightmare especially at a dirt track where anything and everything can potentially go wrong for both competition and venue alike and although small problems did arise the 2009 Season Opener at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway was a success! Great competition towed in from all corners of the region with Corey Conley of Wellsburg WV taking top honors in an exciting Late Model feature while Troy Vaccaro of Sandusky Ohio captured the Sprint main. Winner of a full drum of Sunoco Race Fuel courtesy of Beaver Petroleum, Jason Dollick was very pleased. The racing surface stayed pretty good, the burgers were excellent, everyone had a lot of fun and we look forward to doing it all again next week as “The Chase for the Championship” is on!

New at Wayne County this year, the budget minded “Cruisers” produced only five cars on this night with promise for growth but it was definitely an old hand in the business taking the wins. Bob Fry of Wooster held off Mike Amstutz to the checkers in both the heat and main event. A light field of Mini Stocks was also on hand and Chase Alexander of Orrville Ohio was the class of the field taking the wins with only Jordan James nipping at his heels. Things get hot whenever the Pure Stocks are on the track and it was Troy Anderson who set fast time, Travis Menshing the heat win, and Don Baney best of the fast six however it was Chad Craver of Massillon Ohio who escaped without a scratch to win the caution filled yet edge of your seat feature. The stage was set for a fantastic Sprint car race as Tim Hunter timed in fastest, Cory Crabtree taking the heat and Troy Vaccaro best in the dash. When the green flag waved the start of the main event young gun Sheldon Haudenschild held everyone’s attention as he drove the high line alongside Vaccaro battling for the lead when a lap three yellow flag broke all momentum. The following restart fans witnessed lightning quick reaction time of another youngster as Kory Crabtree burst into the top five along the front stretch before another all too soon caution broke the pace, this time a double as Jeremy Keegan stopped in turn two, Haudenschild in three eliminated with a flat tire. Under green flag conditions Vaccaro took command sometimes holding a full stretch lead over Danny Mumaw and Broc Martin who could only give chase. At the checkers, Vaccaro, Mumaw, Martin, Crabtree, and Aaron Middaugh.

Race fans that came to see Late Models went home happy as a stellar field of cars put on one heck of a show. Preliminary action saw Clint Coffman set fast time, Doug Drown and Jason Flory each with heat wins and Ryan Eddleblute started the night off right with an impressive dash win over Corey Conley. The two led the field to green flag racing in the main event and Conley secured the lead before lap end as Ryan Markham began his famous high side charge toward the front, soon to find third position. The first caution waved on lap 7 just as Conley was closing in on lapped cars. The restart saw Markham pull alongside Eddleblute but the young gun held his ground. Drowns race long battle for fourth with DJ Cline was over on lap eleven before a multi car wreck tightens the field once again. Back to green, Drown now challenges Markham several times before his pass sticks on lap 13. Action everywhere as Coffman battles with Cline, Rick Bond and Wayne Maffett exchange jabs, and Andy Bond begins his charge from mid pack to the front. By lap 20 and five to go Conley increases his lead, Drown and Eddleblute often side by side, Markham, Cline and now Andy Bond in sixth when the final yellow flag for a lone spinner sets up a three lap shoot out. Once again the battle for second has fans on the edge and Drown secures the point over Eddleblute at the white flag, Conley the winner.

Wayne County Speedway is a 3/8ths mile clay oval located near Orrville Ohio, racing every Saturday night. Please visit www.waynecountyspeedway.com for more information.

Crabtree Claims First at Wayne County
April 25, 2009

Orrville OH - A sure sign dirt track racing is not only alive and well, but thriving in Ohio is the wealth of young talent that has recently taken center stage at Wayne County Speedway. Racing alongside some of the most well known names in the business, rising stars such as Ryan Eddleblute, Sheldon Haudenschild, Broc Martin, and Bryce Dickson are making their highly competitive presence well known. At only fifteen years old Cory Crabtree of London Ohio has broken into the next level by scoring his first feature win at WCS over veterans Troy Vaccaro, Tim Hunter, and Aaron Middaugh. Hunter timed in fastest while Danny Mumaw won the heat, but it was Kory Crabtree who led flag to flag in both the fast dash and main event. Although passing was at a premium on the slicked over racetrack, the AMSOIL sponsored 410 Sprinter found enough traction during the race to carry both front wheels off the ground at high speeds down the stretch.

In the Late Models, Corey Conley made it two in row at Wayne County; the Wellsburg WV driver passed David Liles early in the running and was never seriously challenged on his way to victory lane. Highlights of the race include an exciting high and low battle between Ryan Markham and Mark Gardiner battling for sixth, Jason Flory and Jeff Esbenshade battling into the top ten, and the relentless pressure Doug Drown applied to Rick Bond to fill the top five. Flory and Gardiner were both heat winners while Liles scored an impressive fast dash. As always, no shortage of action during the Pure Stock feature. Opening laps saw Brandon Gardner and Chad Craver side by side when a rare slip in turn four allowed Brad Channell to assume a short lived lead as Gardner kept momentum and retakes the lead by turn two. Several cautions kept the field close but Gardner held on for the win. Gardner also claimed fast time and the dash win while Travis Menshing won the heat.

A greatly improved field of Cruisers turned out for the races Saturday night and Mason Radcliff came prepared to take home the money. Radcliff outran Charlie Dawson to score the heat win but found the main event much more of a challenge. Starting pole alongside last weeks feature winner, Radcliff and Bob Fry battled side by side for several laps when a caution brought the field back together, when the green flag waved Mike Amstutz jumped into the mix to make a three way battle for the lead. At half way Steve Hinton picks up the pace and passes Dawson for fourth. With one to go Fry held a slight lead but Radcliff applied just enough bumper to loosen him up, take the point and the win. A stronger field of Mini Stocks made Chase Alexander work a little harder but still managed both his heat and the main event wins. Dale Beckett Jr. earned outside pole by winning his heat and took the main event green flag side by side until an early crash collected several cars. Further back, Brad Hensel and Jordan James exchanged blows and soon caught the front runners. James secured third position and began work on Beckett, side by side at the white flag it was James on the inside to make the pass for second down the backstretch. Alexander the win, James, Beckett, Hensel and Brian Dawson the top five. A large crowd stayed to the end proving Wayne County Speedway race fans are the best anywhere, all racing was complete by 10:30. Next Saturday “The Chase” continues!

Rain! Rain! MORE RAIN!!
May 16, 2009

ORRVILLE OH - That was the headline on Sunday May 18, 1969 at Wayne County Speedway and the same can be used forty years later after suffering a third consecutive early season rain out. If there is any hope, history shows our upcoming event should be a real “hair raiser” as way back then over 60 Flying Stocks qualified in front of over 1400 “Dyed in the Wool race fans” on a cold 50 degree night on that following week.

Some of you “old timers” may remember names like Jim Gentry, Dave Haven, John Middaugh, Berman Meadows, John Magyar, and Dean Alexander often made headlines and their legacy continues to this day. In modern times we look forward to seeing J. R. Gentry, Aaron Middaugh, Chad Craver, Chase Alexander, and Mason Radcliff slingin’ dirt at this historic 3/8ths mile clay oval and with a little help from the weatherman we may return to action next Saturday night with Super Late Models, Sprints, Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Cruisers on the bill.

Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway is located south of Orrville just off Historic Lincoln Highway. We would also like to thank a few of our sponsors including Beaver Petroleum, Fisher Performance, and Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic.

Back then it was Dale Tope and Tommy Pattin making the headlines,
shown exiting turn two and on the gas down the back stretch at Buckeye Speedway

Second Win for Vaccaro at WCS

ORRVILLE, OH - May 23 - After three straight rain outs race fans were more than ready for the high speed “Sideways in the Dirt” excitement only Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway can deliver. In preliminary action Mason Radcliff handily took the Cruiser heat and Jordan James the Mini Stock. Sheldon Haudenschild wowed the fans when he performed a 360 out of turn four and still finished fourth without bringing out a caution in a heat won by Danny Mumaw while Kory Crabtree ran away with the dash. Even with a misfiring engine Travis Menshing easily won the dash and Jeremy Lynch had to be disappointed after losing the Pure Stock heat to Don Baney. In the Late Models Clint Coffman earned his pole starting position by winning the dash over B. A. Malcuit, Mark Gardiner claimed an exciting heat win that saw Dave Hornikel come from last to steal third from JR Gentry on the last corner. More great racing sure to follow.

The Late Model feature began three wide with Wayne Maffett, Clint Coffman, and Brad Malcuit fighting for the lead in turns one and two, flat out down the back stretch until Coffman gets loose in turn four, Maffett now in control of the lead. To no ones surprise Ryan Markham takes the high side of the track, around Coffman, then Malcuit for second before chasing down Maffett and into the lead by lap seven. The tenth circuit a caution tightens the field and Malcuit uses this opportunity to challenge Maffett for second only to be turned away while Jason Flory makes the pass on Coffman for fourth before another caution period. The field turned loose it’s Markham firmly in the lead, Malcuit up high and Maffett down low Flory looks down the middle but thinks better of the move and with two laps to go Dave Hornikel has driven from dead last to steal a top five finish away from Coffman by race end. Markham is a three time WCS Late Model champ and carries sponsorship from CC Performance Racing Engines and Thrifty Muffler.

In the Sprint main and from outside pole, Kirk Jeffries jumped into the early lead over Kory Crabtree who then fell to Troy Vaccaro by lap five. Jeffries appeared to be a sure contender for a win and soon began working through lapped traffic. On the tenth circuit Jack Sodeman passes Crabtree for third and begins to close in on Vaccaro as the race fans roar with approval. Jeffries uses the low groove as he approaches a lapped car, Vaccaro traps him behind and steals the lead with only four to go. With the white flag in hand a yellow waves instead setting up a three lap showdown but Vaccaro is too strong and holds onto the lead over Jeffries, Sodeman, then Crabtree. In a surprise last lap battle Broc Martin steals a top five finish from Danny Mumaw bringing the crowd to their feet as the checkers fall. This was the second win for Vaccaro at Wayne County, his Precision Body and Frame Sprint Car worked the 3/8ths mile clay oval to perfection.

The Pure Stock feature began with a drag race between Travis Menshing and Brandon Gardner before turning into a side by side battle between Gardner and Troy Anderson for the lead with Anderson eventually taking the win. Chad Craver and Brad Channell fought race long to finish third and fourth while Don Baney edged out the Fremont Truck of Dan Henning for a top five. It was all Jordan James in the Mini Stock Feature while Steve Hinton scored his first ever WCS Cruiser win over a strong running Mike Amstutz. We hope you will join us next Saturday night at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville Ohio as we present this areas finest dirt track racing. Conley and Crabtree Claim WCS Wins

Orrville OH - May 30 - A quality field of dedicated competitors gave fans a great show last Saturday night at Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway with Wellsburg WV driver Corey Conley the best in the Late Model feature. A mishap with a lapped car eliminated Troy Vaccaro and made sailing much easier for Kory Crabtree to win his second Sprint feature on the 3/8ths mile clay. Chad Craver held off Troy Anderson to not only win a second main event but to also take sole possession of the points lead. After a strong Cruiser heat win Mike Amstutz appeared to be a shoe in for the feature but Charlie Dawson had other ideas when he took the lead coming out of turn two and ran away for the win. Mason Radcliff used the same move a lap later to secure second and Amstutz had to settle for third. In the Mini Stocks it was all Chad Young claiming both the heat and main event over Jordan James and Chase Alexander, both previous feature winners.

The Late Model feature got off to a great start with Wooster’s JR Gentry taking the early lead but it did not take long for Corey Conley to work his magic and assume control. Close behind Ryan Markham was searching high, Wayne Maffett Jr. low both closing in on Gentry while Doug Drown, Chet Alexander, and Dave Hornikel battled three wide for position. On the tenth circuit Maffett confirms third over Markham and Hornikel around Drown then back again. Not content running second Gentry gives Conley a nudge coming out of two but loses grip in turn four, falling back two positions. Quickly back in control he pulls alongside Markham but slips again and settles into fifth. By lap 18 Conley catches lapped cars allowing Maffett and Markham to close in but works traffic with ease leaving his pursuers to deal. Hornikel takes advantage of this and passes Markham for third, as the race nears the end Drown attempts the same but Markham fights back holding onto fourth. Conley was the top qualifier on the night while Gentry won the dash. Heats went to Chet Alexander and DJ Cline of St Clairsville.

The green flag waved on the Sprint feature and it was going to be a good one with Kory Crabtree and Troy Vaccaro going into the first corners then down the back stretch side by side but a yellow flag for a lone spinner would signal a complete restart. This time Crabtree would simply overpower Vaccaro and take control of the lead. As Jamie Miller, Jason Dollick, and Kirk Jeffries scrambled to fill the top five Danny Mumaw and Aaron Middaugh would use every inch of race track to work their way toward the front runners. On lap seven a spin going into turn one as the leaders quickly bear down, Crabtree barely squeezes thru but Vaccaro not as lucky grazing the barrier, climbing the wall narrowly avoiding a roll over and sending him pit side. Back to green and dash winning Crabtree would stretch his margin leaving Miller, Kevin Lee, Mumaw, and Jeffries racing for the top five. Miller had fast time on the night while Lee and Duffy Smith won heats. Every week the Pure Stocks are the most competitive class going and easily a fan favorite at Wayne County, tonight opening laps of their feature event saw a four way adrenaline filled battle for the lead between Chad Craver, Brad Channell, Troy Anderson, and Travis Menshing. By the fifth circuit entering turn four contact is made leaving Channel sideways in the dirt, dejected Channel showed his displeasure and suffered a further penalty. Back to green flag racing and fast qualifier Craver fought off the occasional challenge by Anderson to record a second win on the season. In preliminaries Channel won the dash and Rich Frame scored the heat.

Please note a slight schedule change for next week, Sprints have been given a night off so we may bring in the Circle Track Mini Trucks and make up for a rain out. Pure Stocks, Cruisers, and Mini Stocks will be included along with a special $1500 to win Super Late Model Summer Sizzler as the main event. We would like to thank all race fans for their support and keeping dirt track racing alive and well. WCS is located south of Orrville Ohio just off Historic Lincoln Highway, please visit www.waynecountyspeedway.com for more information
