An Original Wayne County Speedway Board Member Passes
Orrville, OH --- Stanley D. Huffman, 86, of Wooster, OH, passed away Thursday October 12 following a brief illness at Akron General Hospital. He was an original investor, stockholder and on the board of directors at Wayne County Speedway during the inception of the track and through the 1960’s and early 1970’s.
Stanley and his wife, Emma, were the first to purchase stock in Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, OH in late 1964 when the original corporation was first formed. In the ensuing years he was an active supporter of the track and worked in a variety of positions and served on the original board of directors for numerous years.
He was inducted into the Inaugural Wayne County Speedway Hall of Fame on June 26, 2005, the 40th anniversary of the 3/8 mile banked dirt track.
“On behalf of my wife, family and the entire staff at Wayne County Speedway we are saddened by the news of Stanley Huffman’s passing,” commented Ernie Coffman, owner & promoter of Wayne County Speedway. “Stanley was one of those original group of gentlemen who had a vision and commitment to this race track and because of folks like him we are still here racing, almost 42 years later. It was wonderful to meet and spend time with him last year during our first Hall of Fame ceremony.”
“Of course I don't remember Stan from the early 60's when the track was built, but I had the most wonderful conversations with him the year he was inducted in to our Hall of Fame,” stated Tina Heil, General Manager of Wayne County Speedway. “He had so many stories about the early days of Wayne County Speedway and I believe he told me it was really his wife that put up the first $1000 investment. I'm saddened by his passing, but very glad that I got to know him and hear his stories.”
Stanley was born on November 30, 1919 in French Creek, WV. He moved to Ohio in 1953 and worked at Rubbermaid, retiring after 29 years.
He was a member of the New Pittsburg United Methodist Church and was a lifetime member of the Killbuck Valley Sportsman’s Club. He was an avid outdoorsman who participated in the sport all over the United States.
He leaves behind three daughters, Jane (Kenneth) Wertz, Susan (Pete) Arbogast & Karen (Randy) Kovach; two sons, Edsel (Wanda) Huffman, Gail (Lydia) Huffman; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Louise Wherry.
He was preceded in death by his wife Emma.
Calling hours will be held at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home, 216 E. Larwill Street in Wooster, Oh on Sunday October 15 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Services will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 AM on Monday October 16 with the Rev. John Heavilen officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Township Cementary.
