Orrville, Ohio (June 25, 2012) Kyle Larson made it two wins in two outings with the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions during the 30th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek. The Elk Grove, California native drove from his seventh starting spot to pass Dale Blaney for the lead on lap 13 and went on to score the victory at the NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway Monday.

Larson, 19, who picked up his first UNOH All Star win the previous night at Cannonball Speedway, scored his second consecutive victory at a track he had never laid eyes on. The victory impressed the packed grandstands and reminded many of the veteran fans of another youngster who came to Ohio Sprint Speedweek several years ago and won on tracks he had never seen – 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

“Three and four was elbows up like a lot of places are in California where they have a lot of moisture and rough so that was a lot of fun. I was getting a little wore out there…I usually don’t get tired but I had to take a second and catch my breath there under the yellow. I was really working hard there in three and four and in one and two I had to make sure I didn’t hit the tractor tires on the bottom,” said Larson beside his Abreu Vineyards, Stadelhoffer Construction, Butlerbuilt Seats backed #1k.

“The lappers were pretty tough to get by. They were just fast enough that I couldn’t get a run on them off the exit. Luckily I got a few of them before the yellow so I had a couple between me and Dale there on the restart,” continued Larson of the green, white checkered finish following that late race caution.

“Thanks to Davey, Dalton, Chuck for all their hard work. They built this car in a week and the first two nights out on it we got wins. This is great for Spike Chassis. I have to thank Jeannie and Brian Butler with Butlerbuilt Seats and Abreu Vineyards and Stadelhoffer Construction and everybody that helps out on this car…without them we wouldn’t be able to do it,” said Larson, who won in a stock car recently with the K&N Pro Series East Series.

“We will see if we can make it a hat trick and go three for three. This is really cool to come out here and get wins the first two nights of my speedweek. All the guys are really tough out here. I grew up reading about them and watching them on TV…they’re all really old compared to me…I’ve been keeping an eye on them for a long time,” joked Larson, who will turn 20 years of age next month.

For three time All Star Champion Dale Blaney – who has four Ohio Sprint Speedweek titles on his resume – a late race caution may have spoiled his chances, as he was reeling in the leader in heavy lapped traffic. But, when you consider the problems Blaney and his team have worked to overcome in the first three races of Speedweek, the runner-up finish was a shot in the arm.

“When I saw the #1 on the board I knew it was him (Larson) and he runs pretty good. My car was stumbling real bad in the corners and on restarts so it was hard for me to throttle it from the center off and I had to kind of run up a little bit where I had to keep my speed up. The car was pretty good all night and we didn’t have too many problems and we brought it home second. Hopefully we’re heading back in the right direction and the rest of the week we can do pretty well,” said Blaney beside his Ti22 Performance machine.

While Larson has two wins in his first two Ohio Sprint Speedweek events, Bixby, Oklahoma’s Shane Stewart has two third place finishes in his first two speedweek starts.

“You don’t ever want to start on the pole and fade by any means, but we’re going to have to figure out a way to slow Kyle down. We’re going to have to put a sniper in the trees and shoot one of his tires out. He’s a great talent and it’s always fun to watch him race. Hopefully when he makes it big he remembers all us poor sprint car drivers…he can come back and help us,” joked Stewart beside his Level Performance, Hoy’s Bar, Kear’s Speed Shop backed #29. “I lost my brakes in the middle of the race and was just kind of hanging on. Me and Stevie (Smith) had a pretty good race the last couple of laps and I was lucky to hang on to third which is a solid effort for this team and hopefully we can get a win before I have to go back to Pennsylvania.”

Stewart and Blaney would bring the field to the green with Blaney taking charge over Stewart, Paul McMahan, Bryan Sebetto, Stevie Smith and Larson. Just as Blaney was set to hit lapped traffic on the fifth circuit, the caution would fly for a tangle involving Stuart Brubaker and Ryan Davis.

On the restart, Blaney pulled away from a great battle between McMahan, Stewart and Larson. Larson would drive under Stewart for third on lap nine and around McMahan for second on the next circuit and quickly closed on Blaney. Danny Holtgraver would spin in turn two on lap 11, putting Larson right on Blaney’s rear bumper.

On the restart, Larson quickly dove under Blaney as they raced side by side through one and two, with Larson gaining the advantage down the back stretch.  Larson would pull away as Blaney ran comfortably in second with the battle for third heating back up between McMahan, Stewart and Smith. Smith would take the third spot at the halfway point.

Larson would race into lapped traffic by the 18th circuit and began picking cars off one at a time. However, with eight laps to go, the lapped cars were racing side-by-side in front of Larson, and the veteran Blaney pounced on the situation to quickly close. Meanwhile, Smith, Stewart and McMahan continued to put on a great show for third with Cap Henry, Tim Shaffer and Tony Stewart in tow.

As the laps ticked off, Blaney pulled to within a couple of car lengths from Larson with Stewart moving into third with five to go. Just as it looked like things would get interesting as they took the white flag, Sam Hafertepe Jr. would bring out the caution, necessitating a green-white-checkered finish.

On the restart, Larson would have three lapped machines separating him from Blaney and would hit his marks perfectly to take the win. Blaney, Stewart, Smith and Shaffer rounding out the top five.

As the sun shined on NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway race fans from near and far trickled into the 3/8 mile speed plant. The packed grandstands were treated to great door handle to door handle racing.

In the Lias Tire Super Late Model Donnie Moran and Wooster Ohio Doug Drown lead the field to the green flag. Moran snagged the early lead from Drown. On lap five Drown closed the gap on Moran and began applying heavy pressure to the leader. On lap six fourth starting Russ King snuck past Devin Moran for third. Do. Moran held the lead but the eyes were on King as he chased down Drown and as lap nine clicked by King began peeking under Drown for second place and slipped past Drown. King set his sights on the leader and on lap twelve King looked under Do. Moran but Do. Moran closed the door on King.  With the door closed on the inside lane King used the high side to power past Do. Moran to take the lead on lap thirteen. On lap fifteen Ross Nicastri, Ryan Markham and Keith Berner battled three wide for fifth position. Berner took the position and battled with Drown for third. As the checkers flew it was King coming home victorious. King was followed by Do. Moran, Berner, Markham and Drown. King, Do. Moran and Drown won heats.

Often imitated, never duplicated - UNOH All Stars ready for 30th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek

Written by Brian Liskai - UNOH All Star Championship Racing, LLC PR. Posted in News

speedweek2012 lrg

Camargo, IL  (June 16, 2012) When former Eldora owner Earl Baltes, former All Star president Bert Emick, promoter Jean Lynch and a handful of Ohio dirt track promoters sat down over 30 years ago and dreamed up the Ohio Sprint Speedweek, they probably had no idea how popular the event would become. It has often been imitated by other racing organizations in other states, but nothing can match the excitement of Ohio Sprint Speedway.

The 30th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek featuring the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions will kick off Friday, June 22 and will feature nine straight nights of racing across the Buckeye State. Each event will pay the feature winner $5,000 with the exception of the finale on June 30 at Fremont Speedway, which pays $10,000 to win.

The Friday Speedweek opener at Attica marks the 96th visit of the UNOH All Stars at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” venue since the track opened in 1988. As an incentive for the tough weekly competitors at Attica, the track has put up some bonus incentives. Kistler Engines is offering a $1,000 bonus to the feature winner if that driver is using a Kistler power plant. And, Attica Raceway Park is adding a $1,000 bonus if the winning driver is in the track’s top 10 in points after the June 15 Mid-Season Championship event.

There have been two UNOH All Star events at Attica in 2012, with three time series champion and current point leader Dale Blaney scoring a win with Craig Mintz getting a last lap pass of Blaney to score the other. Blaney and Mintz have both won three features at Attica in 2012 with Bryan Sebetto claiming the only other victory as of June 8.

Attica first began playing host to an Ohio Sprint Speedweek event in 1990. After falling victim to rain outs in 2008 and 2009, six-time track champion Byron Reed scored the speedweek win in 2010 with three time and defending All Star champion Tim Shaffer taking the victory in 2011 on route to the 2011 Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship. Blaney – a four time Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion – has two speedweek victories at Attica.

Defending Attica track champion Dean Jacobs – the 2001 Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion – scored a speedweek victory at Attica in 1998 and has two wins at Fremont Speedway in 2012.

Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $22 for adults; $20 for senior citizens; $10 for teens ages 11-15; kids 10 and under get in free. Pit passes will be $30. For more information go to www.atticaracewaypark.com

On Saturday, June 23, the UNOH All Stars move to Waynesfield Motorsports Park (near Lima, Ohio). Last year the Ohio Sprint Speedweek event fell victim to rain. However, traditionally, the one-third mile bullring has provided some of the most exciting racing during Speedweek.

The last Ohio Sprint Speedweek event at “The Field” in 2010 saw NASCAR driver Brad Sweet pick up the win aboard the Kasey Kahne Racing machine. Sweet recently picked up his first ever World of Outlaws win in Iowa.

Pit gates will open at 4 p.m. with grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. and racing underway at 7 p.m. Go to www.waynesfieldmotorsportspark.com for more information.

Sunday, the UNOH All Stars head to Cannonball Motor Speedway near St. Clairsville, Ohio, on the Ohio River.
The newly reconfigured 3/8 mile track located off State Route 40 near the Morristown exit of I-70, has not hosted the UNOH All Stars in many, many years.

Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing to get underway around 6 p.m. For more information about Cannonball Motor Speedway go to www.cannonballspeedway.com

The fourth leg of the Ohio Sprint Speedweek finds the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions back at the NAPA AUTO PARTS Wayne County Speedway near Orrville, Ohio. The track has not hosted a speedweek event for a couple of years, but was one of the original speedweek destinations when the concept began 30 years ago.

The NAPA Wayne County Speedway, a 3/8 mile oval with long straights and wide, tight turns, was an important part of the creation of the All Stars in the 1970s. When the All Stars last competed at Wayne County for a speedweek event in 2010, Blaney scored the win.

So far in 2012, winners at Wayne County have included Andrew Palker, Caleb Helms, Danny Mumaw and Sheldon Haudenschild.

Gates will open Monday at 3 p.m. with racing underway at 7 p.m. For more information go to www.waynecountyspeedway.com

McMahan, Conley, Dickerson and Aronhalt winners at NAPA Auto Parts WCS

Orrville, Ohio (June 15, 2012) The June 15th edition was action packed with thrills and spills. The grandstands packed full of people were treated to great side by side racing action.

In the Fisher Performance 410 Sprints Rob Chaney and Cole Duncan led the field to the green flag. The green was not displayed very long as the sprinters got up speed a chain reaction crash took out new comer Nick Ley, Nick Patterson and Bill Ault who flipped head over end. On the restart the red flag again was displayed as Jason Dolick tipped over. During the melee Grafton West Virginia Andre Layfield spun and damaged the front end of this racer. Layfield returned pit side, fixed the front end and returned to the tail of field. Third time was a charm as the third restart went off without a hitch. When the green flag dropped Chaney jumped to the early lead. Making a power move Andrew Palker slid past Nashville, Tennessee’s Paul McMahan to take second place. On lap six Chaney on a rail caught the back markers and began lapping the field. On lap eight third running Broc Martin got together with the lapped car of Nick Patterson (23) causing both cars to flip violently high through the air. Both drivers were able to exit their race cars under their own power. As the field took the red flag Chaney steered his rocket ship to the pits retiring for the evening. This moved Palker to the lead ahead of McMahan and Danny Mumaw. When the racing resumed Palker powered to a eight car length lead over McMahan. On lap seventeen the caution flew for the race leader Palker who had a flat tire. This handled the lead to McMahan with hard running Mumaw in tow. On lap twenty two the red flag again was displayed due to Bryce Dickson and Mitch Harble who touched wheels causing both cars to flip violently and scattering race car parts twenty five yards across the race track. McMahan cruised to victory over Mumaw, Palker Chris Myers and Jaime Myers. Duncan, Chaney and Palker won heats and Duffy Smith won the B-Main.

In the Lias Tire Super Late Models Cory Conley and George Lee brought the field to the green flag. Conley coming off a win at Cannonball Speedway jumped to the point ahead of Lee, Ryan Markham, Shane McLoughlin and Charlie Duncan. As Conley led McLoughlin and Markham battled for second which saw McLoughlin slipped past Markham for second. Lee running a aggressive line on the high side battled with Duncan and Rick Bond. On lap thirteen Lee showed a few puffs of smoke and returned pit side with mechanical issues. On lap eighteen Conley still led the McLoughlin and Markham but eyes were on tenth starting Mark Gardiner who had moved into the fourth position and set his sights on Markham. At the checkers it was Conley who lead green to checkers. Conley won ahead of McLoughlin, Markham, Gardiner and Duncan. McLoughlin and Duncan won heats.

In the Bremenour Electric Modifieds it was Norm Aronhalt who jumped out to the early lead. Aronhalt who is leading the 2012 points was dogged by Larry Kugel, Darrick Hubbard and Jim Nicely. Kugel attempted to close the gap on the leader but Aronhalt held point with a comfortable lead. As Aronhalt ran away with the lead the racing through the field was great as Hubbard and Nicely battled back and forth. Nicley was able to blast his way past Hubbard to overtake the third position. On lap sixteen Nicely dove to the infield retiring for the night with mechanical issues. Aronhalt took the win ahead of ***. Aronhalt and Kugel won heats.

In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks Paul Holmes took the early lead. The caution flew early for second starting Jeremy Lynch who attempted to return the pits on his own power but was unable to make it. The race resumed with Holmes in the lead. In the early stages Holmes had mechanical issues ending his night prematurely. The lead then was handed over to Jeremy Dickerson. Gary Hoopingarner who had motor issues last week hassled Dickerson for the lead but was unable to complete the pass. In the final laps Hoopingarner closed up on the rear bumper of Dickerson trying to overtake the lead. At the checkers it just wasn’t enough as Dickerson took the win; he was followed by Hoopingarner, Brandon Gardner, Chase Alexander and Brandon Craver. Dickerson, Hoopingarner and Holmes won heat races and Todd Werntz won the B-Main.

Written by Ryan Pearson. Posted in Results

Orrville, Ohio (June 8, 2012) NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway opened the gates and treated fans to a night of exciting of side by side racing in all division. The racing was sponsored by Rays Garage of Creston, Ohio.

In the Fisher Performance 410 Sprints two good friends Danny Mumaw and Sheldon Haudenschild lead the field to the green flag. On the opening lap Mumaw jumped out to the early lead. It was short lived as Haudenschild flew around the Mumaw on the high side to power to the point.  On lap two the caution flew for Mitch Harble, Ed Neumeister and Bryce Dickson getting together I n turn two. Neumeister and Harble retired for the night with mechanical issues. The racing resumed and Haudenschild extended his lead over Mumaw, Rob Chaney, Chris Myers and Cole Duncan. On lap six Haudenschild setting a blistering pace caught the back markers and jockeyed lapped traffic. Mumaw closed the gap on the leader as they maneuvered lapped traffic. Chaney retired with mechanical issues as he was running third, handing it over to Myers.  Haudenschild still lead but Mumaw closed the gap and caught the leader. On lap twenty one Mumaw closed in the leader as he entered turn two Mumaw spun 360 degrees and held onto to second place. In the closing laps Cole Duncan caught Myers and kept pressuring him for third place. At the checker flag it was Haudenschild coming home the winner. He was followed by Mumaw, Myers, Duncan and Andrew Palker. Winning heat races were Chaney, Duncan and Haudenschild. Winning the B-Main was Duffy Smith.

In the Lias Tire Super Late Models Shane McLoughlin and Ryan Markham lead the field to the green flag. McLoughlin powered to the point to take the lead over Markham and Charlie Duncan. With McLoughlin pulling a five car advantage Duncan began pressuring Markham for second. On lap seven seventh starting Russ King moved around Cory Conley to snag the fourth position. McLoughlin still lead but the eyes were on King as he caught Duncan and Markham and powered past them on the highside on lap ten. King looking like he was shot out of a rocket with a great run off turn two caught McLoughlin and crossed back under and dove under McLoughlin to take the lead. McLoughlin held off a charging Markham as the laps clicked away. Door to door McLoughlin and Markham battled for second with Markham using the high side and McLoughlin down low. Conley stepped up the pressure and battled for fourth with Duncan. On lap nineteen the caution flew for Dave Hornikle. The caution erased the lead King held over McLoughlin and on the restart McLoughlin dove under King to try to take the lead. King jumped back out ahead of McLoughlin and left him to battle with Markham for second. At the finish line it was King, McLoughlin, Markham, Duncan and Conley. It was Kings second win of the 2012 season at NAPA Auto Parts WCS. Duncan, King, McLoughlin and Conley won heat races and Thomas Baker won the B-Main.

In the Bremenour Electric Modifieds Travis Dickson and Kevin Morehouse paced the field to the green flag. At the drop of the green flag it became a family affair as father Mark Dickson pulled along the high side to battle his son Travis for the lead. On the fourth lap the Mark nipped Travis Dickson to lead as the cars cross the start finish line. Travis using the inside line battled back to pressure Mark for the lead. As the father son combo battled for the lead, Morehouse stalked the leaders’ three car lengths back. Lap after lap the front two raced side by side not giving an inch to each other. On lap seven the caution flew for Jon Sluka who spun out. Travis Dickson held the lead but on the restart but Mark moved back to the high side of his son to try to take the lead. Travis Dickson holds the position but he had his hands full with father Mark. On lap fifteen the 2012 Bremenour Electric Modified point leader Norm Aronhalt moved into the fourth position and began pressuring Morehouse for third.  Eyes returned to the point as Mark Dickson battled side by side with son Travis Dickson and on lap seventeen took the lead at the line. The lead was short lived as on lap eighteen Travis Dickson fought back and regained the lead using the low line. With the white flag in hand Mark Dickson powered past Travis Dickson but Travis wasn’t giving up. The checkered flag dropped on the Bremenour Electric Modifieds at the finish line it was the elder Mark Dickson coming home the winner just ahead of son Travis Dickson, Morehouse, Aronhalt and Darrick Hubbard. Travis Dickson and Morehouse won heat races.

In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks Brandon Gardner jumped out to the early lead just ahead of Jeremy Lynch and Jeremy Dickerson. During the early stages Gardner withstood and onslaught of cautions to hold the point. On lap seven the battle for the lead turned into a three car battle as Gardner, Dickerson and Lynch raced three wide. The leaders setting a blistering pace caught lapped traffic on lap nine. Things got dicey as the Gardner and Dickerson split lapped traffic with Gardner diving low and Dickerson moving around traffic on the high side. That move allowed Dickerson to wrestle the lead away from Gardner. On lap eleven Gardner passed Dickerson to take back the lead but the caution flag flew and the field had to reset to the last completed lap giving the lead back to Dickerson. When the racing resumed Gardner powered passed Dickerson to take the lead. Lynch wanting a piece of the action began looking under Dickerson and took second place away from Dickerson. Lynch trying to catch the leader was unable to as Dickerson battled back to fight for the second place spot. Taking the win was Gardner just ahead of Dickerson, Lynch, Josh Miller and Tony Cline. Dickerson, Lynch and Gary Hoopingarner won heat races.

Written by Ryan Pearson. Posted in Results

Orrville, Ohio (May 25, 2012) NAPA AUTO PARTS Wayne County Speedway officials welcomed the World of Outlaw Late Models for their first appearance at the 3/8 mile speedplant in six years for the longtime historic Buckeye Classic presented by Trent Insurance. The packed grandstands were treated to some door handle to door handle side by side racing throughout the entire night.

In the Buckeye Classic NAPA AUTO PARTS Wayne County Speedway regular George Lee and Walker Arthur lead the field to the green. Arthur took the early lead and held it for several laps. Watertown, New York native Tim McCreadie dove under Arthur to power to the point and held a sizeable lead for most of the feature. A late race caution bunched the field and allowed Darrel Lanigan to close the gap and restart right on McCreadie’s bumper. McCreadie held off Lanigan until lap 47 and McCredie slipped high and Lanigan dove under him to take the lead and win. Lanigan was followed to the checkers by McCredie, Chub Frank and Arthur. Steve Shaver, Lee, Lanigan and Frank won heat races.

In the Bremenour Electric Modifieds Norm Aronhalt took the early lead from long time front runner Darrick Hubbard. On lap two the caution flew for Charlie Summers who spun in turn two. When the racing resumed Aronhalt sprung out to the lead again. A tight battle for second waged between Dan Davies and Hubbard. Davies wrestled the position away from Hubbard but Hubbard tried to battle back. Aronhalt was the class of the field as he took the checkers ahead of Davies, DJ Cline and Hubbard. Winning heat races were Aronhalt and Hubbard.
