ORRVILLE – The Malcuits Tavern Super Late Models finally took center stage on Saturday night, and true to form, the cars and stars of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway’s long-time marquee division failed to disappoint. Wooster’s Doug Drown made a clean sweep of the 30-lap Don and Hans Gross Memorial/Renegades of Dirt program by taking the lead on lap 19 from series point leader JR Gentry to record his first victory in more than a year in highlighting action at “Orrville’s Historic Oval.” Castalia’s Jordan Ryan became the 11th different winner in 12 tries by claiming the 25-lap Pine Tree Towing and Recovery Sprint Car feature, while Colton Shaw grabbed his fourth checkered flag of the season by winning the 20-lap Elite Munition Modified main. Anthony Collins scored a popular victory, his first in 12 years, in the JoyRide Mini Stocks’ 12-lapper with John Wilson capping the evening with a trip to victory lane in the wild and wooly 15-lap McKenzie Concrete Super Stock main event. Drown and Gentry shared the front row on the ultra-fast 3-8 mile, which was in near perfect condition after midday showers threatened to derail the Fast Five program for a sixth time this season. Gentry bolted to an early lead with Drown in close pursuit followed Todd Brennan, Cody Scott, youngster Caiden Black, and Friday night Attica Raceway winner Ryan Markham. Drown closed to within a car length on lap 12, and finally took the lead seven circuits later by running the speedway’s middle groove. Markham joined the fray and waged a torrid battle with Gentry for second until Black’s run ended by jumping the cushion on lap 25 which also eliminated Scott. Markham, who was spewing smoke from his familiar 5M much of the evening, retired to the pit area during the yellow. Drown led the remining five laps for the $3,000 score followed by Gentry, Brennan, Attica regular Mike Bores from eighth, and 10th-starting Brett Bee. “It’s been more than a year since we’ve won, which has been a long time for us,” said Drown. “But we have kept digging, and now we are just figuring out how to win again. We’ve been out and about doing other things and haven’t raced much.” The victory was Drown’s fourth Don and Hans Gross Memorial win of his career. “I have a lot of (winner’s checks) displayed at my house, but these Gross Memorial wins mean the most. Hopefully, we can get on a roll the rest of the season.” Ryan has been fast on his visits to WCS, but has left empty-handed until Saturday, which also did not come easy. Ryan grabbed the point from his front row starting slot, and led early followed by Sean Rayhall, who has been equally as fast in recent weeks on the banks of the paper-clipped shaped oval. Ryan, who was battling heavy lapped traffic by lap eight, lost the lead to Rayhall after contacting a slower car. Ryan quickly recovered and set sail for Rayhall with Ricky Peterson, Trey Jacobs, Andrew Palker, and a fast-closing Danny Mumaw and Tyler Street. Another caution on lap 11, however, bunched the field once again with Rayhall surrendering the lead back to Ryan after heading to the Hutch Extreme Photos work area with a flat tire. Mumaw, making one of his strongest runs of the season, moved into third on lap 15 as Palker retired from the event funning fifth followed by Jacobs exiting the speedway a lap later from fourth. Ryan hung on for the win over Peterson, Mumaw, Street, and Rayhall in fifth from the tail. “We’ve been fast and been so close to winning a few this season,” said Ryan beside his MAR Motorsports 25. “In other races, we’ve been fast but haven’t had great starting spots. I knew we could get one of these if we could ever start closer to the front, and now we have the monkey off our back. This is by far my favorite track, and the best fans too. “We’ll be back (this Saturday, July 30th) for the FAST event, and for sure the Pete Jacobs Memorial (Sunday, Sept. 4).” The Modifieds were up next, with point leader Colton Shaw on the pole of the event looking for win four on the season. Shaw jumped to an early lead, with Ron Miller, TA Perrine, DJ Cline, and Tristan Bickford dicing it up behind the 01 before a lap six caution bunched the field. Shaw and Perrine made contact on the restart, though, with a traffic jam on the front straightaway ensuing. As the field once again went green, Cline, a winner this season at WCS, joined the mix but settled for second at the stripe with Miller, Bickford, and Richard Grogg completing the top five. A few weeks back, Mini Stock pilot Anthony Collins introduced himself to some of the WCS staff and proclaimed he would see them soon in victory lane. No truer words have been spoken, as Collins wired the field to pick up his second career win and first since 2010. Collins withstood a bevy of cautions, and the best of the best in the Mini Stock division to claim an extremely popular win which set off a wild victory lane celebration. The last of six cations flew with just six laps remaining, as the driver of the Paul Davis Restoration 71 held on for the win over Kyle Petit, Johnny Bruce Sr., Jordan James, and Justin Cranmore and Doug Hensel, who have combined to win all the previous features in 2022 until Saturday. “Hell I’m out of breath,” joked Collins in victory lane. “This class is tough, and it seemed like every yellow that came out l had someone new starting beside me. They were beatin’ and bangin’ on me those last few laps, but it was good for me because l was getting a little forward push. This is just great.” The Super Stocks hit the speedway last, as all eyes were on pole-sitter and early-season winner Took Wiles, and eighth-starting Kyle Moore, who recently has been a frequent visitor to WCS victory lane. Wiles led early with Moore moving closer by the lap with Wilson, Tyler Wiles, and Brandon Morrow within striking distance. Moore moved within a car length on lap eight, and briefly took the lead with a slider in turns 1 and 2 before Took regained the lead on the exit of turn 2 as the veterans motored down the backstretch with Tyler Wiles moving into third. Moore again attempted to duck under Took in turn 3, but contact was made by the leaders that sent the orange 187 nose-first into the guardrail, catapulting the Rott Shop machine into the 15-foot-high catch fence. After a few anxious moments, Wiles climbed from his destroyed machine unscathed. During the ensuing red flag, Moore was subsequently disqualified from the event, with Tyler Wiles inheriting the lead. During the break, however, Tyler’s black 187 developed mechanical problems and went pitside. Wilson then grabbed the point and never looked back in garnering the win over Brandon Morrow, Josh Morrow, and Don Rutt. The WCS will be back in action next Saturday with a Fast Five series program with the FAST Sprint Car series making its highly anticipated return.
