WILD CHILD WOWS WCS FANS, DEAN JACOBS COLLECTS 3RD STRAIGHT TITLE; CASKEY’S WIN NETS CHAMPIONSHIP; MOORE DOUBLES UP WINS AND CROWNS; CRANMORE’S LATE RUN WINS FEATURE AS JAMES CLAIMS TITLE

Orrville, Ohio

By Mike Swanger

It was Season Championship night at Orrville’s Historic Oval with both the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprints and the Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model titles on the line with the CORBON Ammunition Modifieds, the McKenzie Concrete Super Stocks and the Joyride Transport Mini Stock already locked up for the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts ‘Race to the Championship’ titles.

Just a six point advantage going into the nights action with Broc Martin holding that advantage over Wooster’s Dean Jacobs that would disappear after the heat races as Jacobs won his heat and Martin, driving the 9x sprinter, dropped out of his heat race and would have to start 14th in the feature while Jacobs would begin on the outside front row of the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprint Season Championship feature. The opening lap would see three wide going into turn three as Zach Ames got bumped and was launched into the turn three fencing and as he came back down onto the track, he would get into Broc Martin’s car and flip his ride, ending his hopes of the title. On the next attempt to get the race started, turn three took the brunt of action again as Chris Myers and Trey Jacobs getting together and sending Trey for a wild flip, ending his night, Myers would last until lap 4 when he dropped out with a flat tire. With a stretch of green flag action going, Dean Jacobs would take the lead with Jac Haudenschild in pursuit but on lap seven, the nose wing on Jacobs’ #9 started to come loose as Haudenschild closed in. Following a lap 10 caution for a spun Travis Danford, Haudenschild made a slide move in turn two for the lead but Jacobs came back with a crossover move to retain the lead but the next time around, Haudenschild made the pass stick in turn two and pulled away as Jacobs would be in a dog fight for second as Andrew Palker and Ricky Peterson tried to get by the ailing Jacobs sprinter. Driving the Ron Jacobs Racing and Grove Racing #3, Haudenschild would build up a six second lead but with 2 to go, the caution came out for a stopped Connor Morrell and would bunch the field together. The final two circuits would see Haudenschild pull away for the win as Palker and Peterson dueled to get by Jacobs to no avail as Peterson would edge past Palker for third on the last lap. Henry Malcuit held off Nick Patterson for fifth. Malcuit and Dean Jacobs topped the heats. Jacobs claimed his third straight chapmionship and it was the 4th in a row for the McClure Motorsports team.

It was a four point advantage for Ryan Markham over Orrville’s Mitch Caskey going into the feature for the Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model main and with the pill draw for the feature putting Caskey in the third starting spot and Markham in the 7th starting spot, it shaped up to be a battle to the end. Allan Baker used the pole position to set the pace for the opening four circuits of the feature with Dustin Smith in hot pursuit as Caskey and Markham in their tire tracks. Running the extreme high groove, Smith would bounce off the guardrail a couple of laps in a row and that would cost him as the right rear would go flat coming out of turn four as on lap four he would slow and that would scatter the field behind him as Caskey slowed to avoid Smith, Markham got into the back of the Dan Weaver Trucking, Mid Ohio Graphics and Millersburg Tire #18 of Caskey while JR Gentry went spinning to avoid contact. Markham would go pitside with front end damage but would return four laps down, ending his chances of the championship. On the lap five restart, Caskey overpowered Baker for the lead as Doug Drown took second on the next circuit. As the laps clicked by, Caskey would pull away and build a straightaway lead over Drown, who was felling the pressure from Larry Bellman for second. A lap 23 caution bunched the field together for a two lap dash to the checkers with Caskey pulling away for his fifth win of the season and second in a row to claim the title. Drown held off Bellman for second as Wes Morrison motored past Baker for 4th. Heat winners were Gentry and Aber

Mansfield’s Kyle Moore already had the track championship clinched for the CORBON Ammunition Modifieds and he would start on the pole of the feature and lead all the way to post his 12th win. The only thing keeping the race close was numerous caution flags and on each restart, Scott Peltz and Colton Shaw would make a run at the Kepling Floors, House of Speed and Moore Brothers Racing #2* but never could make the move to take the lead. Peltz and Shaw would finish second and third with Trey Jacobs collecting fourth with first time visitor Nolan Dalton filling out the top five. Moore and Shaw pocketed the heat wins.

It was a hard time getting the first lap of the McKenzie Concrete Super Stock feature underway as the field went down the back stretch on the opening lap, three wide action and contact sent Jimmy Humphrey sliding into the infield, hitting a retaining tire and into the portable light standard, Humphrey was ok but done for the night. On the next attempt to get started, Nick Humphrey slid of the back side of the back stretch into the tires but he was able to continue. Several spins kept the race at a slow pace and when the race went green for a while, Kyle Moore and his CORBON Ammunition, R C Kuhn & Sons and United Concrete #21d quickly grabbed the point and collected his 8th win of the year as he clinched the champioship just by starting the heat race. Rob Melzer held off Braden Tucke for second with Took Wiles and Brandon Craver rounding out the top five. Heat winners were Don Rutt and Moore. This was race two of the Shortstop Summer Series.

Doug Hensel set the pace for the opening ten laps of the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stock feature but mechanical woes stopped him at that point and it became a race up for grabs. Jordan James was looking to add another win to his total as he also clinched the championship just by starting the heat race but the power plant of his machine gave out on the restart on lap 11 setting up a dash for the win between Johnny Bruce Sr., Roger Parsons and Justin Cranmore with Cranmore powering past on the restart and put the Mansfield based Button’s Auto Repair and Smith’s Welding & Fabrication #2 into the Summit Racing victory circle for the second time this season. Parsons nipped Bruce Sr. at the line for second with Ryan Carder in Fourth followed by Dustin Bedlion. Collecting the heat wins were Bruce Sr., Kenny Long and Hensel as Carder corralled the last chance win.

All drivers were once again competing for the Contingency Connection ‘Racer’s Rewards for the night and the season.

Action goes to Sunday, September 5th next week with the $15,000 to win Pete Jacobs Memorial for the Sprints with the Ohio 305 Race Saver Sprints and the Modifieds on the racing card. Gates will open at 3 pm and racing at 7 pm.
