CALE THOMAS CONQUERS WCS’ KING OF COUNTY RACE; NEW RIDE DOESN’T SLOW CASKEY’S LATE MODEL WIN; MOORE SWEEPS MODIFIED & SUPER STOCK FEATURES; 5 WINS FOR JAMES

Sunday, July 4, 2021By Mike Swanger The pits were filled and a big crowd on hand for another action packed night of racing at Wayne County Speedway with all 5 class’ of cars with all vying for more O’Reilly’s Auto Parts ‘Race to the Championship’ points plus it was round 3 of the King of the County Sprint Challenge. Trey Jacobs would beat Nick Patterson into turn one for the lead of the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery feature but a spin involving Danny Mumaw, Bradley Howard and Jason Dolick would negate that start. The next attempt would see the same results as Jacobs would set the pace with Patterson in tow for the 1st three circuits. Andrew Palker edged past Patterson on lap four when the yellow waved for Broc Martin who had slowed and pulled off as Tyler Street went to the infield before the race resumed with mechanical issues. On the restart, the first red flag appeared for Chris Myers, who tumbled at the end of the back stretch. The green flag would be out for one more lap when 5th running Ricky Peterson would do a 360 bring out the caution again. With some green flag action following, Trey Jacobs would pull away from the field with Palker and Fairland’s Cale Thomas slide jobbing each other for second with Dean Jacobs behind them. The race would come to a stop on lap 16 as R J Jacobs hit the turn two berm and flipped over the back stretch tires. Back to green and Trey kept the lead as Palker and Thomas continued their duel as Dean Jacobs and now Henry Malcuit pulled into fifth in front of Patterson. The third red flag waved when Peterson belted the turn two guardrail and barrel rolled on lap 19. All drivers were ok that flipped in the race. This would bring out an open red as crews could work on the cars. This restart would see Palker over powering Trey Jacobs going into turn one for the lead as Jacobs began to falter and would come to a stop in turn 4 with three laps to go with a bad right rear tire. The final restart with three to go would see Thomas doing a big slide job on Palker to take the lead for good as Dean Jacobs grabbed second away from Palker on the next circuit and at the same time Jamie Myers, the last chance winner, edged past Patterson for fifth behind Malcuit. Putting the Ohio Heating, Engler Machine and Southport Chick-fil-a #91 into the Summit Racing victory circle for the 1st time, Thomas, who was also the quick timer, had recorded a fifth place finish during the All Star Speedweek show at Wayne County Speedway. Heat winners were Patterson, Peterson and Palker. Using his pole position, Jerry Aber set the pace for the opening 4 laps of the Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model feature with third starting Mitch Caskey in his tire tracks. A lap 5 caution for a spun Eric Hamilton in turn four brought out the yellow flag and on the restart. Caskey would overtake Aber for the point. The Orrville driver had thought his season was over with last week when the motor expired on his car, was offered the ride in the Hover Racing and Ocala Restaurant Supplies #co2, making him the 4th driver in that car this season at ‘Orrville’ Historic Oval’ as Brad Malcuit, David Airgood and Kyle Lukon have had good runs in that machine. Using the extreme high line in turns one and two like he always does, Caskey pulled away for his third win of the season and breaking the tie and reclaiming the points lead. J R Gentry moved into second on lap nine as Aber began to fade as Todd Brennan moved into third on lap 12. After two lap 17 cautions for Tyler Evans and Nick Cox, the yellow was back out on the next lap when Aber and Brett Bee got together in turn one and Aber went pitside. As the green flag reappeared, Nathon Loney swiped third from Gentry as Caskey once again pulled away from Drennan and Loney as they finished in that order as Wes Morrison overtook Gentry for fourth with three laps to go. Fast timer Gentry and Aber topped the heat races. Mansfield’s Kyle Moore set the fast time, won his heat and took the lead on lap four to claim his 6th CORBON Ammunition feature at WCS. Bill Griffith set the pace for the first three laps before giving way to Moore and his Kepling Floors, Moore Brothers Racing and Arnold Motorsports # 1* at the line for lap four. After three cautions on laps seven, nine and ten, Ryan Ayers moved past Mark Gardiner for second and tried to chase down Moore by using the same line but he kept a one second lead over Ayers throught the last half of the race to the finish line. Scott Peltz finished fourth behind Gardiner as Griffith, who also won a heat race, ended up fifth. Moore would do the same thing in the McKenzie Concrete Super Stock field as he set fast time and won his heat but this time it took him a little longer to get the lead in the feature as Paul Holmes led the way for the first seven circuits as Moore was working his way up from his 8th starting position. Moore placed the R C Kuhn & Sons, Corbon Ammunition and Smith’s Welding & Fabrication #21d into second on lap four and then zipping past Holmes in turn two on lap eight for his third Super Stock win. As the two leaders pulled away, it was a battle for a top five finish as Jimmy Humphrey, Chase Alexander, Rob Melzer and points leader Don Rutt. With a lot of rubbing and contact going on between those drivers as the yellow was out with Alexander going for a new tire and Rutt charged with the caution as he and Humphrey made contact. As the laps wound down and Moore in control with Holmes chasing, 16th starting Brandon Craver took over third as the white flag waved and Justin Lorentz moving into the fourth spot and finish in that order while heat winner Alexander recovered from his flat tire to grab fifth. The JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stocks were going after the Tom McConathey Memorial trophy and the feature would get off to a rough start as Johhny Bruce Sr. smacked the turn one guardrail and flipped over as he would be shaken up but ok. It would be a four car battle in the early stages of the feature as Mitch Reichard and Kyle Petit was side by side for the lead with Loudonville’s Jordan James and Doug Hensel on the leaders back bumpers. After a lap four caution for David Keagy, Hensel would take the lead on the restart as Reichard bobbled as James moved into second. James used the outside line in turns one and two and pass Hensel on lap nine and Hensel tried every way he could to get the lead back from the Lorentz Lawncare, E A Construction and Lochevale Farms #83 of James but could not do it as James’ made his fifth stop in the Summit Racing victory lane. Hensel finished second while Dustin Bedlion worked his way from starting 16th to finish third as Petit and Reichard filled out the top five. Collecting the heat wins were Hensel and Jolene Voshel. All the drivers were also chasing after the Contingecy Connection Racer’s Rewards weekly and season long prizes. Racing returns to Saturday night, July 10th with the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprints, the 305 Race Saver Sprints along with the CORBON Ammunition Modifieds and the McKenzie Concrete Super Stock in action.
