It was a perfect weather night of action at Wayne County Speedway as the Ultimate Late Model Series was in for the 4th leg of the Buckeye Late Model Dirt Week and the 5th annual Hans and Don Gross Memorial along with the three other class’ as all drivers were racing for O’Reilly Auto Parts ‘Race to the Championship’ points and the Contingency Connection ‘Racers Rewards’ prizes.

Dash Winner Dave Hess Jr. and Fast Qualifier Doug Drown of Wooster would bring the Malcuit Tavern Late Models to the green flag of the 30 lap main and in the early stages of the race, Drown would lead with Hess Jr. pestering him for the top spot and behind them were a pair of number 14’s, Corey Conley and J R Gentry were dueling for third with 8th starting Tyler Carpenter making it a three way battle on lap five. Drown would start to pull away from Hess Jr. but a caution on lap 12 would tighten the field back together and then the last yellow flag two laps later would set the stage for a fantastic race to the checkers. Drown would continue to set the page as second heat winner Carpenter would motor past both Conley and Gentry on the last restart and go door handle to door handle with Hess Jr. for second the next three circuits before securing that position. In those laps, Drown and his JOYRIDE Transport, ABR Farms and 89 Homes #12 would build up a margin out front that he would need at the end of the race. Carpenter would start to narrow the gap on the Drown and as the white flag waved, was sitting on Drown’s rear bumper. Going into turns three and four, Carpenter would go high with Drown in the middle groove and as they came out of turn four, Carpenter had the run he needed but not the room as they would make contact about 100 feet from the finish line with Drown getting across the line a little bit sideways for the win while Carpenter, the Kar Connection Hard Charger, bounced off the front stretch wall to take second. For Drown, it would be his fourth Super Late Model win at WCS and with that win, also clinched the Attica Raceway Park and Wayne County Speedway Late Model Series crown. Hess Jr. would finish third with Gentry grabbing fourth and first heat winner Alex Ferree filling out the top five.

The only things slowing Shreve’s Trey Jacobs run to the checkered flag in the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprint feature was caution and red flags. Starting the Harbach Electronics, Bell Boys Trucking and B & W Hauling #3j feature on the pole, Jacobs established quickly that he was the one to beat. He out gassed Danny Mumaw into turn one on the start to take control early. Andrew Palker would take third from T J Michael on lap five and then he and Mumaw would battle for second as Jacobs set a torrid pace out front. The first red flag of the race would fly on the next circuit as Tyler Dunn and Troy Vaccaro getting together with Vaccaro rolling over. The restart would see Jacobs pull away again as Mumaw and Palker continued their hot race for second as Michael and Dean Jacobs dueled for fourth with Clay Riney closing in on them but Riney’s night would come to an end on lap 15 as he belted the turn three wall to stop the action. It was non stop after that with Jacobs disappearing from the field with the lead. Dean Jacobs slipped past Michael for fourth on the restart but Michael regained the spot on the next go around as Tom Schinderle made a play for fifth on lap 18 but Dean Jacobs reclaimed that spot on the next lap. Trey Jacobs had more than a straightaway advantage at the 5 to go mark and the battle between Mumaw and Palker started to take a toll on both as Michael took third from Palker at that point and then reeled in Mumaw and took second as they came down to the finish line. Mumaw and Palker would take third and fourth with points leader Dean Jacobs in fifth. Before pulling into the Summit Racing victory circle, Trey Jacobs did a great burn out to celebrate his 1st win at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval.’ Mumaw and Michael pocketed the heat wins.

Starting 7th in the McKenzie Concrete Super Stock feature, it took Wooster;s Doug Drown 14 plus laps to get to the front and score his sixth win in the Super Stocks. John Wilson took the lead at the drop of the green flag from his outside pole position starting spot and was looking for his second win but four caution flags through out the race kept the field bunched together as Wilson could not distance himself from the field. Drown and his Char’s Cars, K & A Tree Service and Gionino’s Pizza #21d would take second from Joe Gillespie on lap eight and then run in Wilson’s tire tracks. The two heat winners would run that way with Drown exploring different angles to try to make the move on Wilson. Going into turns one and two on the final lap, Drown would go high and then cut down low coming out of turn two to swipe the lead away from Wilson and make back to the checkers first. For Wilson, it would be his sixth second place finish to go along with his one win. Gillespie would finish a season best third while Todd Sherwin took home fourth for the second time this season. James Alleman rounded out the top five.

In the previous seven nights of racing in the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stocks, there have been six different winners with only Wes Staley having two wins. After the 12 lap feature this week, Smithville’s Brad Hensel would notch his second win. Driving the JOYRIDE Transport, D J Services and NewFast Motorsports #28, Hensel picked his way through the field from his sixth starting spot and moved into second on lap four behind race leader Wyatt Zimmerman. With the top four of Zimmerman, Brad Hensel, Doug Hensel and Cory Staley bunched together, Brad Hensel took the point at the halfway mark and then held off those three for to claim the win. Zimmerman would hang on to second as Doug Hensel and Staley would go back and forth before finishing in that order. Jordan James would fill out the top five. Posting the heat wins were Brad Hensel, Wes Staley and James.

Next Saturday night, August 3rd, the FAST Sprint Series will be at Wayne County Speedway for the only time this season plus the Malcuit Tavern Super Late Models, the McKenzie Concrete Super Stocks and the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stocks also on the racing card. Gates will open at 4 pm Hot Laps at 6 pm and racing starting at 7 pm
