Mother Nature tried to stop the racing at NAPA Jani Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway Saturday as a heavy shower hit the track just after the gates opened, but Jason and Kristin Flory decided to wait it out and the crew got the track into shape and all except the CorBon Super Stock, which got the first three laps in and will start at that point next week, and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stock features were completed as the rain returned.
The 25 lap Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association feature would go green for just seconds as outside pole sitter Stuart Brubaker tagged the wall going into turn one to quickly end his night. That would move Danny Mumaw to the front row and the winner last week at WCS and the OVSCA winner the night before, took advantage of that and grabbed the lead with fifth starting Lee Jacobs putting the early pressure on. Mumaw would start to pull away from Jacobs with Brad Haudenschild now mounting a charge on Jacobs for second and at the 10 lap mark, took over the runner up position. All this time, Fremont’s DJ Foos was picking his way through the field from his ninth starting place and was in fourth. Haudenschild would close in on Mumaw as lapped traffic slowed up the leader but Haudenschild bounced off the guardrail in turns one and two on lap 15 and was able to coast his car back into the pits as Foos slipped past Jacobs for third and then into second with Haudenschild’s departure. On the restart following a lap 18 caution, Foos would try the slide job on Mumaw in turns one and two but could not complete the move as Mumaw would out power Foos down the back stretch. With three circuits to go, the turn one and two guardrail would draw Mumaw in as the leader slowed and that was all Foos needed to take over the point. Mumaw would keep running with Jacobs closing on him as Foos quickly pulled away for the win. Driving the NAPA Auto Parts, Crown Batteries and Jet Express #23, Foos would pull into the Summit Racing victory circle with his second career OVSCA win at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’. Mumaw would hang on to second right in front of Jacobs. Breaking while leading his heat race, Jordan Ryan finish fourth from his 16th starting spot. Rounding out the top five was Tyler Gunn who was to start third but a flat right rear tire right after he pushed off knocked him back to the last starting position as he then mastered his way through the field for a fifth place finish. Heat winner for the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprints were Haudenschild, Jordan Harble and Mumaw.
Piloting the Hall’s Auto Sales, Wooster Glass and JoyRide Transport #12, Wooster’s Doug Drown led flag To flag for his first Kar Connection Super Late Model win of the year at WCS. Drown would be challenged for the first seven laps by J R Gentry. At that stage of the race, Gentry pulled off with mechanical issues, giving Drown a huge lead over Brad Malcuit. Points leader Ryan Markham was pressuring Malcuit for second but the turn one and two guardrail would add another driver to it’s list as Markham hit it and flatten his tire and sending him to the work pad for a new one on lap 10. Drown would once again open up a big gap following the restart as last weeks winner, Cody Scott, was pestering Malcuit for second as D J Miller ran fourth and Jerry Aber in fifth. Markham quickly moved back into the top five at the halfway point and with nine circuits to go, took over fourth from Miller. With Drown’s big lead, the fans attention turned to the three way battle for second for the rest of the feature and at the finish it was Malcuit in second as Scott edged out Markham for third and Miller rounding out the top five. Scott and Gentry scored the heat wins.
The skies opened up once again as the CorBon Super Stocks were on a lap three caution with Paul Holmes leading and that feature will be picked up at that point next Saturday. Holmes and Bob Daugherty lead the way in the heat races.
The WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks will run their rained out feature next Saturday also before the regular program gets underway. Collecting the heat wins were Jordan James, Doug Hensel and Wes Staley.
Next Saturday night, May 19th, NAPA Jani Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway will host another Fast Four program the will feature the Ohio Sprint Car Series (OSCS) along with the Kar Connection Super Late Models, the CorBon Super Stocks and the WQKT 104.5 Mini Stocks.
